I (like thousands of others) recently downloaded version 2.0 of the Google Desktop and have begun to play around with it. I wasn't too impressed by the first version but this one is looking much cooler already.

My biggest problem is the lack of Canadian cities for the weather module. I can approximate the weather in Vancouver by adding Seattle, no biggie but try finding a proxy for Montreal. Plattsburgh, NY? “No Weather Information“. OK, something a little bigger. Albany? “No Weather Information“. Hmph! Well, at least the temperatures are available in good old metric units. Damn near un 'merican!

Update: It seems that both Albany and Plattsburgh weather just came online for me. I guess you just have to give it some time to poll those “out there” locations. Good stuff. Now get working on Canada damn it!

Update 2: Thanks to the comment from Eric I gave the old Canadian cities another shot. Montreal and Vancouver were both recognized and the weather information came up just fine after a minute or two. Looks like someone at Google was listening. Who says my blog doesn't wield any power???

Also, Rob Chartier has already written a WinAmp plugin for Google Desktop in C#. Very cool. I think I'll be downloading the SDK and seeing what I can hack together shortly.

Hey Pete,
I installed it too and I've had success adding some Canadian cities to the weather panel. I added Montreal, Qc and Windsor, On successfully. But Vancouver, BC didn't work. A bit surprising since Vancouver is a bigger city than Windsor.

Loving all things Google, I was also bummed by the lack of the few Canadian cities I tried. I just tried Victoria, BC again, and the Sidebar at least accepts Victoria (it used to reject Victoria, BC as invalid). No weather info yet.

One trick I used previously was to enter the postal code (e.g. V8m2A5). I was able to get weather readings that way. May work for other users in Canada who live in cities not yet recognized by Google Desktop.
