I spent the past few days preparing for and teaching another in house workshop. This time it was about a proprietary system we have called Pipeline which is responsible for moving and massaging data between various systems in the enterprise products we make.

The prerequisite is a day and a half course that I use as an introduction has been recorded so that students can now view it as a web cast at their own pace. This also means that I don't have to deliver it any more, which is better I guess because I don't have to spend time going over the same material over and over again. However I don't get a chance to answer questions or really reinforce the material if I find students are having troubles, but it's a small trade off.

I designed the workshop as a series or exercises where the students need to look at errors which have occurred in the system and track down the source of the error, record why the error is occurring and suggest a possible solution. This is basically the same route they would need to follow when handling an issue at a client site, so it's a good primer for what to look for and how to think creatively about the issue.

Overall the workshop went very well and I found that this format works well since it makes the students dig and think on their own but I am always there to answer questions or to give hints as to what to look for.

Now that the training is over it's back to looking at C++ and fixing code.
