Something I have been thinking about quite a bit lately is the future of work. The way we work in general and the way I want to work more specifically. For most people working as developers, project managers or even at a help desk, all you really need is a computer and a decent sized pipe connected to the rest of the world. I can do just as much work (if not more) from my desk at home as I can at my desk at work. Heck, I even listen to webcasts from the couch sometimes while keeping half an eye on the ball game.
So, when I came across this blog post from Chris Sells I had to comment with my aspirations. I would love to be able to live and work in the Silicon Vineyard. This is an area in British Columbia's Okanagan Valley that has traditionally been an agricultural and tourist area. Now it is being touted as a new high technology area in rural (or semi rural) surroundings, the Silicon Valley meets Napa.
This is the way the future looks like it is going. With connectivity getting better and better people are increasingly going to be living where they want to live rather than where they have to just because of work. Sure you sometimes need that face time of meetings and such, but on line collaboration is getting so much better we can meet almost as effectively in separate locations than we do in the same room.
So, anyone in Kelowna or the rest of the Okanagan (or even Vancouver) looking for a developer ;-) ?
How many of you out there would like to be able to work from somewhere else but are currently tied down to a city just because that's where the jobs are? Where would you go if you could?
