WBW4 - New World Riesling
Update: I forgot to mention that Wine Blogging Wednesday 4 was being sponsored by Derrick at An Obsession With Food. Here is his link to the summary of WBW4. This is my first attempt at a Wine Blogging Wednesday and the topic of New World Riesling is right up my alley. For the past few years my wife and I have been enjoying the wines of the nearby Niagara Peninsula in Ontario. After a few visits to the area we have found that Jackson Triggs is easily our favourite winery and some of their best wines ......

Montreal Blogger Conference
Sébastien Paquet wrote about the idea of a Blogger conference in Montreal comparable to the Northern Voice conference that is going to be held in Vancouver in February. He even started a wiki about the conference and it is taking off. So, anyone interested in coming to Montreal for this conference watch the above spaces. Personally I think it would be best if it was during the warmer months (May-August) so that all the attendees can get to see the best of the city. The other months tend to be ......

Grilled Cheese Miracles
Fresh on the heels of the image of the Virgin Mary on a grilled cheese sandwich we have another miracle. Someone is auctioning off the Hello Kitty Grilled Cheese Sandwich. Bid now, it's only going for $45.00! My favourite quote about the Virgin Mary sandwich from the former owner: "I feel like I am doing something I should be doing, that is something she wants me to do.” Yeah, that and $28,000 convinced her to sell it. Training Again
I spent the past few days preparing for and teaching another in house workshop. This time it was about a proprietary system we have called Pipeline which is responsible for moving and massaging data between various systems in the enterprise products we make. The prerequisite is a day and a half course that I use as an introduction has been recorded so that students can now view it as a web cast at their own pace. This also means that I don't have to deliver it any more, which is better I guess because ......

Rural Outsourcing
Something I have been thinking about quite a bit lately is the future of work. The way we work in general and the way I want to work more specifically. For most people working as developers, project managers or even at a help desk, all you really need is a computer and a decent sized pipe connected to the rest of the world. I can do just as much work (if not more) from my desk at home as I can at my desk at work. Heck, I even listen to webcasts from the couch sometimes while keeping half an eye on ......

Scoble the humanitarian
It looks like Bill G's humanitarian efforts are not the only good things coming from the people at Microsoft. Robert Scoble writes about a call he got from the producers of ABC's Extreme Home Makeover. The best part of Robert's writeup: Now, this is the kind of PR opportunity that a company would kill for, right? So, why am I putting it on my blog? Because this is the kind of thing that the entire industry should share in, not just Microsoft. Thanksgiving is just around the corner. How can we help ......

Dot Net Rocks in Vegas
Update: Fixed the bad links. Sorry about that. Rory's writeup of Vegas and the Dot Net Rocks party just got posted. Carl also wrote up a piece about it including a link to pictures. Too bad I couldn't make it, it looks like it was lots of fun... :-( (Hence the sad music today...) P.S. Russ, where can I get one of these shirts? Or are they a Microsoftie thing? Currently listening to: Somebody's Crying - (02:48)Chris Isaak, Forever Blue ......

MSDN Deep Dives
I attended the MSDN Deep Dives event here in Montreal the other day and was very impressed. The talk was on Building Connected Applications, something I have to work with on a daily basis. The concepts put forth were very interesting. Something we struggle with at work is making sure that the data we need to move between systems maintains it's integrity as it's passed along. We do a good job of it too, but even 0.01% of data loss can be a big deal to clients with millions of rows of data spanning ......

Elevation - U2 tribute shows
I wrote about seeing a great U2 cover band back in July and this week I received an update about their upcoming shows. So, if you're in any way 1. A U2 fan and/or 2. want to see a good show and/or 3. a Democrat who just relocated to Canada looking to make some new friends then definitely check out one of the shows below. Chances are Erika and I will be at the show on November 6th, so leave a comment if you can make it and say hi at the show. Saturday, November 6th 2004 (Doors open at 9PM, show begins ......

Star Wars EPIII

Thanks to Justin I just checked out the Teaser trailer for Star Wars Episode III.

I got shivers. Sweet. Can't wait until May....

Update: Looks like Chris is getting his hopes up too. No word (or cartoon starring Jar Jar) from Rory yet.

Try{} Catch(...){}
I just spent the better part of two days adding try{} catch(...){} logic to a bunch of code to hopefully make it more stable. Although it's a bit tedious it's fun and I'm going slow to make sure I don't forget something and introduce a new bug. Triple check everything. :-D Unfortunately my back and joints have been hurting badly this week (changes in weather! blah!) and all the typing hasn't helped. I also missed the GUVSM meeting on Monday on account of feeling so crappy. I'll be posting again soon ......
