I spent my lunch hour yesterday watching the following talk by Microsoft Architect Pat Helland. If you haven't taken the time to see this I highly recommend that you do.
Metropolis : Envisioning the Service-Oriented Enterprise
Length: 01:12
I had seen these interviews with Pat earlier on Channel 9, but the full presentation was VERY interesting. System architecture is definitely something that needs to be thought out more and more as systems start communicating together without human intervention. I'm trying to pick up as much of it as I can and really incorporate these ideas into my designs.
We (as consumers of technology (notice I didn't say users)) just want set stuff up and then have it just work and it's big business that is driving things for the most part, but then there's always things like Podcasting that show us where the future is going and that's being driven for all intents and purposes by a handful of geeks in their spare time. Very cool.
BTW, Pat Helland's Blog is can be found here. Subscribed.
