Last week I took the lovely Mrs. Stack of Toast to a show in Laval. See, she's a big U2 fan. Not the hiding-in-the-bushes-of-the-hotel-and-jumping-on-Bono type of “Big Fan” but a big fan nonetheless. So, when I saw that a U2 cover band was going to be playing in our neck of the woods, into the Outlook calendar it went.

The place was the Moomba Supper Club in Laval, just north of Montreal. They don't seem to have a web site (too hip to be on the net?), but here's a Google search. Lots of clubbin' kind of people talking about it. The club is kind of a retro 80's style place with a Miami vibe, at least that's how it was described to me. It wasn't too bad, but filled with lots of wannabes and hipster doofuses. Not exactly our style, but not a bad place, all in all.

The pre-show entertainment was a fat white dude dressed up as a Sumo being fed grapes by a blonde white lady dressed in what appeared to be a white curtain wrapped around her. Yeah, I get it, it's performance art, po-mo or whatever you want to call it, but for me it's weird for the sake of weird. That went on for at least an hour. At least we had drinks and chatted to keep ourselves occupied.

Anyways, the show finally got under way and it was cool. The name of the band is Elevation, and I guess by the way “Bono“ spoke French they were locals, which is cool. The music was all the stuff we already know, but it was neat to hear it live and up close. We caught the Elevation tour in 2000, but we were in the nosebleed seats at the time so the band was, as Erika put it, “four little fleas jumping around on stage“.

These guys were really putting tons of energy into the show and it only slowed down a bit in the middle when the went into “Electrical Storm” and something slow from Joshua Tree (I don't remember exactly what it was). The end of the show was great and they came back for a long four or five song encore, which was great.

I totally encourage anyone who's a U2 fan or a fan of live music to check these guys out, they put on a great show. They even go as far as to sort of dress like the guys, “Edge” with his number 7 t-shirt and “Bono” with the sunglasses and leather jacket. Fun stuff.

P.S. - If anyone happens to have some pics from the show let me know and I can post them.

# re: Seeing U2 (almost) 7/24/2004 10:33 AM FranCo (Edge) from Elevation
Hi Peter...

Thanks for the kind words.. and for dropping by the hippest place in Laval (says me!!) for our show. We've only played there a handful of times - but we've been together doing our U2 schtik up and down Canada for 11 years!!! - and yes, we're that old!!!... but we age gracefully - like U2. You're right, we are locals - we hail from St.Leonard, Laval and little Italy so it's always nice to get to know folks from our neck of the woods.. we are also an original band and are working on a new album - I'll e-mail you more info as it develops.

In the meantime, with your kind permission, I can add your name to our database and keep you updated to future Elevation performances via a newsletter... we had some people take snaps at Moomba's, but I've yet to receive them.. I'll forward anything I get..

Thanks again.. next time you're about, be sure to come by and introduce yourself and enjoy an adult beverage with us!!

Cheers,
FranCo - Elevation
