In my last post i explained how i managed to fix the welcome screen. The next morning i booted my PC up and was receiving a confusing message.

The Logon User Interface DLL MRVGINA.dll failed to load

All it allowed me to do was restart the computer and it would just occur again. After i took my mind off things and thought about it i realized i should open it up in Safe Mode. After getting in i realized i had no clue what i was meant to do so i done some research and came up with this simple solution.

1) Press F8 once you boot your PC up, until a screen comes up asking you what operating system you wish to load.

2) Press F8 once more and on the screen that appears highlight Safe Mode and press enter.

3) It should return back to the first screen, highlight Microsoft Windows XP Professional and press Enter.

4) Now login when prompted and just run this program by Doug Knox: www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/fix_xp_logon.htm

5) Restart your computer and you should be able to login normally.

What off your computer? MRVGINA.dll you should only need to complete the steps taken in this post (link) if you are having problems with your welcome screen.

# re: MRVGINA.dll 2/4/2008 2:28 PM Dan
I F8 key and nothing happens. Now what? Please help?

# re: MRVGINA.dll 2/4/2008 3:11 PM Paul
You need to press it at the appropriate screen. You should see some sort of loading screen and then at the bottom of the screen it should have 2 options or so. Thats when you press F8. If it didn't work try pressing it immediately or a little later than usual. But it should work.

Thank you so much, was able to download the program and burn it on a CD then open the laptop in safe mode and download it from the CD. Then restarted the computer and it's back. FANTASTIC!!!

How sure that this is a permanent fix? Or do I need to do anything else to prevent future problems? I have deleted my Netgear and switched to Linksys.

# re: MRVGINA.dll 2/4/2008 4:17 PM Paul
That is it :)

I haven't had problems yet and when i do (which should be never) then ill post how to fix it :)

Thanks again.

Why in hells name is this file on the Netgear install disk?
I have contacted them and they would NOT give any support and claimed it was just part of the standard install and would offer no more information. I was told it was not a problem. The hell it's not. I have installed 9 PCI wireless cards into a system and crashed the entire network.
Netgear can go to hell. I will NEVER use their products again.
The so called "support" is run from some offshore call centre with morons that barely speak English and have a set of Q & A in front of them. Anything "outside of the box" is put down to user error!!

I tried several times and several ways including the one suggested in order to fix the mrvgina.dll issue on my computer but everytime I try to run your little program to remove it it says the file is in use no matter if I am in safe mode or whatever. Norton won't help, microsoft won't help and my warranty with dell is up. Can anyone help?

# re: MRVGINA.dll 5/28/2008 10:23 AM Hervey
Brilliant, excellent. Worked a treat. Thanks so much.

# re: MRVGINA.dll 6/3/2008 8:19 AM Tona
I'm glad I researched before buying a wireless network card. It seems that there is a solution to this issue... but in my case, why bother. I'd just go with linksys instead.

It puzzles me that they included it in the install if it's gonna cause issues. I read that is supposedly needed for remote desktop access when using NETGEAR products, but when trying to remote access it also says MRVGINA.dll is not compatible... so breaks functionality and it even doesn't do what it's supposed to....go figure?

something to else to read about this:

When i downloaded the file i did not need to go to "safe mode" when i downloaded it so you could save some time by just clicking the file without going to "safe mode"

# re: MRVGINA.dll 9/9/2008 5:37 PM pavan

# re: MRVGINA.dll 9/19/2008 4:54 AM Tito
Gosh, its just not working.
Ok erm. when i press F8 once, a blue screen comes up that that askes me if i want to restart XP or something, or if i want to install XP SOMETHING LIKE THAT
What do i do from this point???

# re: MRVGINA.dll 10/1/2008 3:02 PM Marty D
I ran XP_FixLogon.exe straight from Windows and it worked like a charm. At first it said the GINA value wasn't standard, I clicked Repair, then it said it was standard, I rebooted and it went right to the welcome screen. I checked User Accounts in Control Panel and the "Select logon and logoff options" screen was available. Thank you. I'll be sure to keep this exe on my flash drive, I think I've ran into that problem before but never knew how to fix it. Even if I have to go into Safe Mode, it's better than pulling my hair out!

# re: MRVGINA.dll 11/19/2008 11:12 PM Steve
Wow! This even worked with Windows Server 2003 standard.

The problem that caused it was from installing a Netgear WG311v3 CD driver.

Thanks heaps for the little program!!!!!

My partner was given a computer which has WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL AND VISTA INSPIRAT ULTIMATE on it, didnt think that was possible.

The problem is I cant access the welcome screen so I found your site and followed the steps that you said but when I go into safe mode I cant access the internet to type in the program: www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/fix_xp_logon.htm.

So nothing is working at present. We also just got a wireless router (d-Link) if thats any help.

Should I unistall VISTA or would that affect the computer or programs that are currently on there?

Thank you for the solution to a problem I had never encountered before. As a computer tech I'll buy different brand network cards in future. Netgear used to be reliable now I am not sure. It sure wasted a lot of my time and I could not deliver a new computer to anyone with a fault like that. I am really grateful for your help.

# re: MRVGINA.dll 6/7/2009 2:26 AM Vibek Chaterjee
I am facing a problem while remotely connecting my PC by VNC software with another computer due to the existence of MRVGINA.dll file in that computer. And for kind information Netgear is already installed to that computer which I want to share. So is Netgear & MRVGINA.dll are all related to each other? Besides how should I deal with this MRVGINA.dll problem?

# re: MRVGINA.dll 6/7/2009 11:42 AM Terry
I came across this problem after installing a netgear wi fi card - although hadn't realised the installation had caused this problem until put the problem into a search engine. Was able to straight to the site to get the fix and it worked without any problems. Thanks dougknox.com!

# re: MRVGINA.dll 6/20/2009 9:09 AM Tony

Oh and I'm very disappointed with Netflix.
I got the MrvGina.dll error after running the Netgear CD...while I have the PCI adapter already installed from a previous XP install. I read somewhere that Netgear isn't compatible with server 2003. So, I guess I'll have to get a new adapter :(
When I got the error, I read so many posts and thought I would have to re-install server2003.
THEN finally found this, your solution is perfect with clear steps (not too much to read), and the .exe file just fixed it like majic. Yay!!
Thanks a lot!!!!

Thanks for great help - I installed Netgear PCI W/L card in my 2003 Server. Could not Login. After several tries I found this site. Cure was start in Safe Mode, run the XP_FixLogin program, then reboot - start up normal.
New Hardware Wizard could not find drivers for card but I found another site http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/983089.html where INF files can be downloaded.
