Aero Glass With the Toshiba M200

Tuesday, March 07, 2006 9:14 AM
W00t! I have Aero Glass with the Toshiba M200 and the February CTP 5308 build of Vista. I downloaded the nVida driver found here. I have a nVidia GForce Go 5200. Installing the driver in the “INF – Right Click” install method they outline did not work, nor did doing an Upgrade Driver on my video card in Device Manager. I had to select the video card, tell it to let me manually choose a driver and then tell it I had a disk and I would select the driver from it. I then browsed to the file I downloaded from nVidia and selected it. It then listed all of the drivers available in the download. Even though the website says my card is supported for Aero Glass, it is not listed in the resulting choices. I chose the GForce 5500 driver and crossed my fingers. Once I rebooted, viola! Aero Glass. I had one panicky moment as I launched Outlook, the screen went black and my cursor staid as an hourglass for at least 10 minutes. Finally I hit CTRL+ALT+DEL and my screen popped back! Phew . . . Surely not the recommended method for getting Aero Glass, but if you are not of the faint of heart, give it a try!

How is working on the M200 w/ glass enabled, is it as functional as working in XP, in terms of stability running glass, is it slow & laggy?
and what are the specs of your m200? 3/25/2006 3:23 PM | drtigerlilly

It does not slow it down all that much. The biggest drawback is occasionally (mostly when opening Outlook for some reason) the screen goes black. If I hit CTRL+ALT+DEL and then hit cancel on the resulting screen I back to normal. 3/27/2006 6:48 AM | Chris Haaker

I downloaded the drivers from the Toshiba site. It's a bit slow (8K/sec)
I uploaded them here:

(on the rapidshare site press free, wait for 2 minutes, enter the 4 letters. Repeat after an hour for the other file. I download with 1.2MB/sec from theri servers) 1/24/2008 1:16 PM | Stavros D
