Microsoft announced Monday at the SQL Server 2005 Launch Event that it is making available “Express” editions of Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005 for free. These editions are lightweight, easy-to-use, and easy-to-learn tools for the hobbyist, novice, and student developer. SQL Server 2005 Express is the new replacement for the MSDE\Personal SQL versions previously used for stand-alone lightweight SQL databases need by an application or individual user. Developers will get express versions of Visual C#, Visual Basic, Visual J# and Visual C++. These are free for one year as well as a cornucopia of add-ins and templates. Learn about it all here.
