Installing Vista Beta 1 in a Virtual Machine

I have just started to test installing Windows Longhorn Beta 1 in a Virtual PC environment. You will need to have your VHD pre-formatted (I suggest using the Windows XP install CD) before beginning the Longhorn installation. Once the Windows XP setup has finished formatting the hard disk, exit the setup, reboot, and then proceed to boot from the Longhorn Install DVD. I also experienced errors trying to virtually mount the DVD ISO from within Virtual PC 2004 SP1. I had to mount it virtually in the host OS to a drive letter before the VM would recognize it. I used Microsoft's free Virtual CD mounting tool which can be found at:

Interesting. I used Virtual Server last night and was able to format the partition from within the Vista install. Oh well. VPC and VS actually render the setup readable but then drop to 4-bit upon first boot. VMware just looks like crap all the way through first boot until you get the video driver on there. I've got the first impressions of a VMware install over on my site if you use VMware as well. Thanks for the info.

Great tip! Had to use your XP "preformatting" way. Thanks!

Thanks for the Heads up on this chris - just about to give Vista a shot on VMWare in the next day or two. As far as the Samsung goes, I might have to look around town this weekend and see what they look like in the flesh ;-)
