Technically Speaking All in on IT

I have been going back and forth between using XPlay and Windows Media Player or iTunes to manage my tunes and iPod. When I contemplated switching back to iTunes (XPlay was giving me numerous errors when syncing to the iPod) I was disappointed as I thought I would lose the “What I am Listening To” functionality in MSN Messenger. But lo and behold it integrates with iTunes as well to show what you are listening to. I like that. Microsoft could have left out that functionality out of spite for Apple! Kudos to the MSN Messenger team!

maybe you could help me with my problem... I noticed the same thing, only when iTunes4 took over, Media Player was no longer recognized by MSN Messenger. Now that I've downloaded iTunes5, nothing is being recognized. How do I get MSN Messenger to show what I'm listening to on Media Player AND iTunes? Any ideas....?

*nevermind*
I should have googled more before bothering you...

Tools, Plugins - check MSN Messenger.

At least that works in Media Player.

When i clicked on the arrow under the personal message space and clicked "turn on what i am listening to" and nothing happend. Why is this?

if iTunes isn't working try everything else, but make sure you have iTunes properly installed. i.e. you might need real player installed too which downloads with it so I suggest you get the newest version of iTunes. I've been trying to figure it out for months and it was only because I didnt have either the newest version on iTunes/real player. =] it work works! *dances*

I just got the new Windows Media Player 11 Beta and it’s pretty cool. The upgrade broke the Turn on “What I’m listening to” feature in MSN / Windows Live Messenger. Here’s the steps to getting Turn on “What I’m listening to” working again.

Click the Now Playing menu (not the button).

Scroll to plug-ins - Other - and make sure that “Windows Live Messenger Music Plugin” is selected. I’m guessing there’s similiar option for MSN Messenger Music Plugin, but I can’t say for sure.

# re: MSN Messenger and What I am Listening To
Requesting Gravatar...
i got it to work, heres what i did

!!!!FOR EVERYONE THAT LISTENS TO MUSIC ON itunes!!!
If you cant get MSN to show what your listening to, it means MSN or itunes or both are missing files.
So all you have to do is go to MSN and download messenger again... you dont need to uninstall first MSN will ask you if you want to remove or repair messenger, click repair. After the repair is complete it will ask you to restart your computer click restart later.
Then go to apple.com and install the latest version of itunes...once again you will not need to uninstall before doing this, apple will ask you if you want to repair or remove itunes, click repair.
after you have repaired itunes restart you computer. Once restarted open MSN and itunes and play a song it should work then.
if not then you can follow the regular steps.
which are:
For MSN:
Go to Tools, then click on Options... in the drop down menu, then check the "show song information from Windows Media Player in Personal message"
Then...
For itunes:
Go to Edit, the click on Perfrences, then go to the advanced TAB then make sure that minimize itunes to system tray is UNCHECKED, then hit ok.
You should then right click on your taskbar (if you dont know what that is.... it is the bar at the buttom of you screen with the time and all your open windows). When you right click on the taskbar a pop-up window will show, move the cursor over Toolbars and make sure that itunes is CHECKED (this will thereby enable itunes).
YOUR ALL DONE. I did all of this and it worked, so if this doesnt work for you then you are in my prayers cuz i know you must be frustrated :(

Yay its working. Some of the directions I got before were confusing though. I thought i was supposed to go to MSN Msgr to fix the plugin problem when I actually had to go to Windows Media Player.

As they said, go to Windows Media Player, select song>Now Playing drop-down menu> Plugins> Other> Windows Live Msgr Plugin.
It worked!, thanks guys!

# re: MSN Messenger and What I am Listening To

Ok I have the opposite problem as everyone else. I was using itunes as my default player and of course was surprised that Windows Live messenger picked up what I was listening to. However.... I recently started using Windows media Center as my default and for some reason the "Show what I'm listening to" feature won't work with anything except itunes now.

I uninstalled itune, quicktime, apple software update, and anything else I could think of relating to the program to see if the default player would revert back to windows media player but there was no change. I then unistalled windows live messenger and reinstalled it, restarted the computer and still the feature won't work with my windows media center or windows media player.

Is there some setting somewhere in my computer that needs to be changed to make things work properly. I've tried everything I can think of. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Contacts can't see your music
To share song information with your contacts, you must have Windows Live Messenger and Windows Media Player configured to work together.
To configure Messenger:

1. Select Tools, and then click Options.
2. In the left pane, click Personal.
3. Under My Display Name, select the Show song information from Windows Media Player as a personal message check box.
4. Click OK.

After configuring Messenger, you need to configure Windows Media Player to work with Messenger.
To configure Windows Media Player version 11:

1. Start Windows Media Player.
2. Click Now Playing.
3. Under the Plug-ins menu, click Options.
4. In the left pane, click Background.
5. In the right pane, select Windows Live Messenger Music Plug-in.
6. Click OK.

For all other versions of Windows Media Player:

1. Start Windows Media Player.
2. Select Tools, and then click Options.
3. Click Plug-ins.
4. In the left pane, click Background.
5. In the right pane, select Windows Live Messenger Music Plug-in.
6. Click OK.

I have the same problem.

coincidentally, i have both windows media player n itunes on. i did this n i did that on both programs, nothing worked.

i then closed windows media player, and live messenger immediately detected my itunes and showed the song i'm playing!!!

so i guess, u shld open only one music player, so that live messenger wont get confused.

try it.

In order to make messenger show what ur listening to when listening to iTunes and having VISTA installed, it is necessary to get the SP1 for Vista. this definitely solves the issue. solved the problem for my friend!!! guaranteed

Please and thank you.

I've never had a problem with live messenger showing what I'm listening to on iTunes... until now!

I've just recently installed the newest version of Windows Live Messenger (8.5) and since then it won't show what I'm listening to on iTunes. It will show what I'm listening to on Windows Media Player (11), but this isn't my default player.

Does anyone know how I can get my tracks on iTunes to reappear on WLM 8.5?

Oh yeah, I also have the latest version of iTunes - not sure if that's relevant or not!

YOU MUST OPEN iTunes FIRST, THEN OPEN MSN...if that doesnt work check your msn messenger settings and make sure the proper pug-ins are selected under iTunes and make sure you check the "personal" section of "options" in msn..

Yes you can, simply select the option that shows it from your Windows Media Player and if you have your iTunes open and it is set to your default media player and not WMP open then it will select the music titles from that, no problem. It works with both programs and as far as I know it may work for more players (Realplayer, VLC Player etc.)

To set it to your default media player:
Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > On the left panel choose "Set Program Access and Defaults > And choose custom and you will have various options.

Thanks for the info, it makes MSN 8.5 and iTunes 7.6.2 mesh perfectly lol. Having to revert to the WMP GUI for those couple weeks was a PITA.

You might need to check that windows media isnt processing at the same time, if it is it will override itunes and therefore take over what msn is doing, press shift+alt+delete then click on task manager and processes and check that WMP is not running, if it is, close it, and msn should be able to pick up on itunes (Y).

FOR ITUNES USERS::

TO ENABLE 'WHAT IM LISTENING TO' ON MSN YOU MUST BE LOGGED INTO A WINDOWS ACCOUNT WITH ADMINISTRATIVE PRIVILAGES. THEN YOU DO WHAT THE POST ABOVE SAYS AND CHANGE DEFAULT MEDIA PLAYER TO ITUNES. THEN RUN ITUNES AND MSN. this should work

I spent ages flicking through these and nothing helped me.

i upgraded iTunes and my msn no longer displayed what i was listening to.
In the end i gave up with this site and look through all the help sections on iTunes, if iTunes or msn is not set as default media player / instant messaging program then it will not work. I simply went on

Start > set program access and defaults
Add remove programs > custom, click the drop down arrow.
Choose a default media player > iTunes
Choose a default instant messaging program > windows messenger.
OK.

retstart it and you're done.
hope this helped some of you.

iight for iTunes ppl.

do all da shit dat dis dude said:
"!!!!FOR EVERYONE THAT LISTENS TO MUSIC ON itunes!!!

(or just skip da above step n try dis one below first)

if not then you can follow the regular steps.
which are:
I did all of this and it worked, so if this doesnt work for you then you are in my prayers cuz i know you must be frustrated :("

and after all dat make sure yu go to windows media player and go to: TOOLS> PLUG-INS> and make sure yu untick da Windows Live Messenger Music Plug-in.

It worked for me n i hope it works for yu
Coz i know how frustrating it can be

first of all, where you would type your personal message into live messenger, click the arrow to the right, and tick 'Show what I'm listening too'

then if you want to show what your listening too via iTunes, OPEN iTunes, CLOSE wmp. ( or vice versa)

then whilst in your choice of media player, go to Tools (maybe Options for iTunes) > Plug-Ins > Windows live messenger music plugin.

To configure Windows Media Player version 11:
Start Windows Media Player.
Click Now Playing.
Under the Plug-ins menu, click Options.
In the left pane, click Background.
In the right pane, select Windows Live Messenger Music Plug-in.
Click OK.

this is what you all looking for

1. press ctr + alt + del and go to task manager
2. go to the processes tab
3. find wmplayer.exe
7. right click > end process tree
8. close the task manager

Then it should start working again :)

Good luck!

My problem is slightly different than all of yours.
I am 100% sure that my windows media player is version 11, the latest one there is. Yet when I tried to click on "Show what I'm listening to", it tells me that this feature only works with wmp version 9 or later.

I don't understand?

I fixed this problem in a way. Here's what I did:

-----------------------------------------------

1*

"Re-install Windows Media Player" (If you already disabled it like I did. If you haven't; then this step is negligible. But make sure you've got the latest version of it installed.)

In this screen you find an option to enable/disable Windows components:

"Control Panel\Add-Remove Programs\Add-Remove Windows Components"

Wait until the list is loaded and look for the "Media" tab.

Enable the media player and let it install.

-----------------------------------------------

2*

When it's done, open it. At the configuration i'd suggest you give Windows Media Player as less right as possible. (I did this because iTunes is my default music player and I didn't want to get my configuration messed up again.)

When you're done with that, play a track in Windows Media Player and one in iTunes.

Then, open up Messenger.

-Select "Options" from the Tools Menu of Messenger.

-Select the Personal section.

-Select the "Show song information from Windows Media Player as a personal message" and click OK.

(With the newer versions of Messenger it may differ how it's written there... but you get the point.)

-----------------------------------------------

When done correct you should see the track that's currently playing in Windows Media Player poppin' up in the personal message bar of Messenger.

Then just close Windows Media Player. When doing that, keep an eye on the personal message bar. If correct, the track you started in iTunes now pops up.

That's it.

You can now disable Windows Media Player again, following the steps above at "1*".

-----------------------------------------------

This is the way it worked for me. I can't guarantee it will work forever (After an update of Messenger or iTunes it may not work anymore but you could try to repeat this process) but I hope it helps you guys.

Greets,
Musiomana
