Apple WWDC Keynote Highlights - My Observations
I wanted to take a moment and jot down some of my initial impressions on the announcements coming from the Apple hype machine today at the keynote. Not being able to attend - largely due to it selling out in two hours - made me especially bitter that Apple would not allow the event to be streamed live. Steve said during the keynote that if they sold more tickets he didn't know where they would hold it. Considering it takes place at Moscone West, the smaller of the two centers, try moving it across...

Silverlight Error in IE
I get this all the time in IE and it really gets frustrating. I see it for inline video using Silverlight in IE. I get the error that I need the most current version of Silverlight to see the video. When I tell it to install Silverlight it tells me the latest version is already installed. Logic loop! Anyone know how to kill this? Feel free to shout out in the comments below. Windows 7 & Server 2008 R2 RTM
Microsoft announced at 1:40pm PST yesterday that Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 have officially been “Released to Manufacturing” which is to say all the bits have been finalized and signed off on. You can read announcements here, here and here. And, of course, all over the twittersphere. Bits hit TechNet +, volume licensing download sites and MSDN on August the 6th. I can now rebuild my laptop for the last time (until that Windows 8 beta is released). Congratulations Microsoft. Some critics...

That’s How I Roll
I wanted to write a blog post to document how I do some day-to-day things. It helps me to keep track of my work habits, refine them and perhaps help some others who are looking for some solutions. My current rig is a Apple MacBook Pro 13” unibody. It has the 250Gb drive with 4Gb memory. I am running the latest version of OS X Leopard. I am really enjoying the 13” form factor. It is a little smaller and lighter than the previous 15” unibody which, to me, just felt heavy. I also don't notice the lost...

Palm Pre and iPhone 3GS
I have had the good fortune to test both the Palm Pre and Apple iPhone 3Gs. In my day job I am an architect with responsibilities over messaging and mobility – hence I get to try a lot of new devices in order to evaluate their applicability for our enterprise users. One thing I have come to regard as a universal truth is that ranking mobile devices is almost a waste of time. They are so subjective depending on the personal habits and preferences of the person using them. There are some things that...

Apple WWDC Keynote
Well, the annual feeding frenzy known as the WWDC keynote is now over. There was a lot of good information presented on both Snow Leopard and the iPhone. It was pretty demo-heavy as well – better if you see it in person than if you are at home waiting for the next great tidbit of information. One thing I found interesting were the OS X active users statistics shown at the opening of the keynote. Now, perhaps I missed it – feel free to correct me if I did – but they make it come off like they sold...

iPhone WWDC Updates Today
Ah, I love it! All of the tension of the Palm Pre vs. the Apple iPhone on one page. I wonder if this was intentional or just sheer coincidence? I will be following it live like many others. I will also be getting a Palm pre in the coming days to play with and of course, a review to follow. I will be curious to see if Apple outright calls out the Palm Pre in the keynote. Do they do a straight-up comparison a la OS X vs. Vista...

TechEd 2009 Day 1 Morning
I am sitting in the auditorium waiting for the keynote to start. I am curious to see if there are any surprise announcements or if it is just a re-hash of all the recent public announcements. Rumor has it they may announce VS2010 beta 1. I am sure they will highlight Office 2010 and Exchange 2010 – but to what degree I am not sure. My hotel was a big disappointment – but I picked it and was tricked by the flashy website so I have no one to blame but myself. I feel like I am staying at a Moroccan...

Windows 7 Aero Messed UI
The only bad thing I have noticed as a result of running the RC1 (7100) build of Windows 7 is some strangeness in the Aero UI. This is on a Dell e4300. About 3 times over the last 48 hours, my window frames go to hell. I can press where the minimize, maximize and close icons should be and they behave correctly, however the corner is a blurred mess as is the rest of the window frame. I am using the video driver which Win7 installed so I may have to try the Dell version. When I went to install it,...

Exchange 2010 Mailbox Configuration Scenarios
So I am trying to sketch out some mailbox server scenarios for my Exchange 2010 design. I think I am leaning towards iSCSI or perhaps direct-attached SAS drives, but since I am doing virtualized Exchange servers, I don’t think I can load all the storage I need in to the ESX chassis. That leaves me with iSCSI. I am looking at three models to ‘standardize’ on for the business: Config 1: 1Gb mailboxes x 1000 mailboxes max = 1Tb database Config 2: 1Gb mailboxes x 500 mailboxes max = 500Gb database 3Gb...

Microsoft Ads Target Tough Times
Microsoft may finally have a winning ad format in its PR battle with Apple. Their latest ads, to air during the NCAA Basketball Tournament, focus on the price of a PC running Windows vs. the price of an Apple computer, the only thing you can legally run the Mac OS on. In these tough economic times, I think this is a solid strategy for Microsoft if you really don't have any druthers as to which OS you use, or are torn and are looking for a tipping point to help you make up your mind. However, I know...

Then I started to look in to it as I tried to find something that would let me merge notes from my Mac and my Windows virtual machines. Windows 7 and Anti-Virus
There have been some reports of Windows 7 being incompatible with AV programs. This is not unusual for beta operating systems that often have bit level changes that don't please AV programs – they are tightly coupled. You may just have to run without AV for a bit while beta testing. Another reason why it is B-e-t-a. Some people just cannot wrap their heads around that. My employer currently uses McAfee v8.5 which would not install on Windows 7. However, moving up to version 8.7 fixed the issue and...

Windows 7 in Boot Camp
As soon as I got my mitts on the M3 build of Windows7 at the PDC last year, the first thing I tried was to run it in Fusion on my 15 inch MacBook Pro. It ran just fine sans one little thing – I could never get it to recognize the Marvell Ethernet adapter. Windows 7 Pre-Beta @ PDC 2008
Went to an amazing demonstration of Windows 7 today. The UI changes are very nice. Although they still stick to the mostly tired start menu on the right > start > programs, the taskbar UI has been given a complete make over. I hate to rant, but what is the deal with no Outlook for Mac OS X? How hard is it to port this application over? My guess is not too hard, however, if *every* great Microsoft app was available for OS X then the reasons for running Windows would diminish quickly. One of the missing things from Windows Vista that most perplexed me (or frustrated the monkey cr*p out of me) was the lack of the RunAs shell extension. I have recently been introduced to a company called PostPath. They are a new technology company that have created a Linux-based alternative to Microsoft's Exchange. Their proposition is that Microsoft Outlook is the killer application. And if that back end can run on cheaper hardware and storage with a highly-flexible open source OS, all the...

Microsoft Windows Server 2008
Mary Jo Foley caught a good one over at the presspass website for WinHEC 2007. Originally, listed in the link bar is a link for "Windows Server 2008 reviewer guide" which linked to the Longhorn Server Beta 3 guide. She even took a screen shot of the link bar in case Microsoft changed it after realizing the blunder. The name has not been officially announced yet. And was she ever right. I have a shot here of the new link bar in which it reads "Windows Server Codename "Longhorn" Beta 3." Nice. Technorati...

User Switches From Mac OS X to Windows Vista
Here is an interesting story: someone switched from Mac OS X to Windows Vista and reports a faster, more pleasurable experience. Quote: "I didn’t expect it to be like this, I didn’t want Vista to be this good - I was expecting to boot back into OS X and living happily ever after, but damn, this is one fast, slick and nice operating system. If you are a Mac user try it yourself, install boot camp and Vista and it will feel like you just added another CPU and doubled your RAM - I can’t see any evidence...

Exchange 2007 and Virtualization
As of SP2, Exchange 2003 was supported in production in a Microsoft virtual environment. Now that Exchange 2007 requires 64 bits to be supported in production and Microsoft does not have a virtualization platform that supports a 64 bit guest, Exchange 2007 is not supported in production in a virtual environment. You Had Me at EHLO just posted some information on Exchange 2007 SP1. This one stood out - it will be a bit before Windows Server 2003 SP2 is implemented. Of course, it will be a bit before Exchange 2007 is implemented! Regarding the operating system, SP1 for Exchange 2007 will require Windows Server 2003 SP2. This will be a hard dependency for installation, so the operating system must be upgraded to Windows Server 2003 SP2 before you upgrade the Exchange 2007 RTM installation to Exchange 2007 SP1,...

Adding Exchange Tabs to ADUC in Vista
There has been a hack and an official KB on how to run ADUC under Vista. And while not perfect, it is functional. No one I know can understand Microsoft's logic for not having this solved prior to shipping Vista. If you also want to enable the Exchange extensions in ADUC there is one more step. After you do the things mentioned here, copy these three DLL's from a Windows 2003 Server (c:\%systemroot%\system32): netui0.dll netui1.dll netui2.dll Then re-register regsvr32 \windows\system32\maildsmx....

Windows Live Writer Wishes
I have been using Windows Live Writer since it was released (sorry BlogJet!) and have been generally very happy with it. I have two wishes for anyone on the product team that may be listening out in the blogosphere: Add a way to export the blog account settings. This will allow me to easily get my accounts back in when I reinstall my OS. If you can export the preferences (and all my pings) that would be great too! Add a menu entry to check for updates to the program. I hate having to depend on blog...

Zune on Vista Part Duex
Even though the support wizards at Zune told me it wasn't compatible, I had a hunch it had more to do with me trying to install the previous version of ZuneSetup (the one that wasn't Windows Vista compatible) than the version of Vista I was using. Sure enough, in the comments and through my own confirmation I found this to be false. I have been running Windows Vista RTM since it was released to MSDN a little under a week ago. So far, it has been bliss. Nothing major, or even close to major has made me want to switch back to XP. WTF Windows Vista and Zune ?!?
So a lot of us ran out to Circuit City, Target, CompUSA, etc. to get our hands on Microsoft’s latest portable media offering – the super-hyped Zune. Zune has been in production, publicly, for at least the past 8 months. Even longer behind the scenes I am sure. At the same time Microsoft has also been feverishly developing and testing in preparation for release the latest incarnation of its desktop operating system – Windows Vista. Common sense would tell you that somewhere in that time span someone...

Anyone who administers an Exchange messaging system knows the value of something called "Single Instance Storage." Now imagine applying this principle to file servers. Those 50 people that got that email save the attachment...

Testing Windows Live Writer
I decided to give Windows Live Writer a try after hearing reading some good things about it. I have been using BlogJet for awhile and am very happy with it. In fact, Dmitry was a little upset that a bunch of Live Writer's features had seemed to have been pulled from BlogJet. And I can see why he is upset. I think his tool was just beginning to gain traction and take off and now Microsoft has released a free tool that is - for the most part - comparable to BlogJet. I would be upset if I was him as...

Rod's Right About Charles Cooper
Rod Trent wrote today “Charles Cooper Shows He Simply Writes for Page Views.” He asked readers to read the latest CC post and provide their views. I did. And I agree. How easy is it to write an inflammatory article about Microsoft’s record with vulnerabilities and patch release schedule? I can only imagine the article he would right if no patch had been released. I love this quote especially: “Defenders will argue that it's unfair to demand perfection from Microsoft; that...

Mounting an Image With ImageX
After you have created a *.wim image file using ImageX you may want to take advantage of the tools ability to mount the image file. Since the image file format is file-based (and not bit-based like Symantec’s Ghost) you can mount it as read-only or read-write. Files can easily be extracted from it or added to it. No more needing to image a workstation, modify it, and then re-image it back when you want to make a change. New driver? Add it. new DLL? Add it. Simple as that. However, before you...

Hasta la vista, Vista
I guess it was only a matter of time before the Apple clue-less train started to pound on Vista at the annual gathering of the faithful in San Francisco. The Moscone center will be the venue again for the annual gathering of Apple fanboys hanging on Steve Job’s every keynote word. I can only imagine what the nearby Apple Store will look like post keynote! Taken from Engadget, here are some of the banners from the conference – taking a swipe at Microsoft’s Vista. Apple is always...

One Week With Vista
So far it has been a solid week with build 5472 of Vista. All previous builds had not lasted this long – the previous record being held by beta two of two days before frustrations drove me to yank it out and replace it with XP SP2. There are still some minor inconveniences, but all in all it is running fabulously. There is quite an improvement in overall speed of responsiveness in the OS in general as well as in IE7. More programs work well with it, although my iPod cannot get its firmware...

Office 2007 Gets UI Tweaks and Themes
Some screen shots have been posted of tweaks made to the UI of Office 2007 as well as the addition of a “silver” theme to the current roster of “black” and “blue.” The changes are expected to be finalized over the next week. Read more about it here and here. Personally I like the changes. Microsoft Launches Exchange 2007 Community Forums
Much like it has for Vista, SQL and other technologies Microsoft TechNet has recently launched a community-style forum for Exchange Server 2007. However, at the moment it is short on volume and guidance. Every topic had more posts on Windows Vista issues than Exchange. Agnitum Pounds Windows OneCare
I was reading a post at the SunBelt Blog about Agnitum’s review of Microsoft’s Windows OneCare. Other than to say that the Agnitum crew is highly respected, Alex was basically passing on their findings. It should be noted that both SunBelt and Agnitum make firewall products of their own. This obviously gives them expertise in the space, however, I cannot quite help but read into the comments knowing they sell a competing product. Does this mean that the competition shouldn’t review...

If you work in OneNote 2007 a lot like I do, then you almost always have it in front of you. In a meeting and need to do a little on-the-fly calculation? It has been the first thing I have turned off each time I have installed the beta. Guilty as charged! However, Jesper, in his blog makes a good case for leaving UAC turned on throughout the beta process. However will we make it better? Okay, I am a lot less concerned about Windows Vista after seeing this build than I was with build 5308. The “fit and finish” of this build is way beyond what 5308 was. All of my device drivers for a Thinkpad R52 were automagically detected and installed. I haven't had a chance to see if the Thinkpad-specific software works yet or not; I hope to try that tomorrow. You Cannot Upgrade Windows With an OEM CD
Took me a while to figure this one out . . . but in the process of trying to upgrade an NT 4 domain to Windows Server 2003, the only CD available to me at the time was the Dell OEM CD that came with the new server. Every time I launched setup I was presented with the error: “Windows Setup does not support upgrading from Microsoft Windows NT Server to Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition.” I read and read and read the release notes and sure enough it states that you can upgrade...

Installing Vista Beta 1 in a Virtual Machine

I have just started to test installing Windows Longhorn Beta 1 in a Virtual PC environment. You will need to have your VHD pre-formatted (I suggest using the Windows XP install CD) before beginning the Longhorn installation. Once the Windows XP setup...

Running a Domain Controller as a Virtual Machine
Rod Trent posted over on his blog some thoughts on running a domain controller as a VM (virtual machine). I can think of two places I would do this. Disaster recovery and as part of a "swing" upgrade to active directory from an NT4 domain. In most instances you are building a new destination DC on new hardware, and have an NT4 domain controller on older hardware. Build the new Windows 2003 Server and then build an NT4 server on it as a VM. Promote it to be the PDC. Upgrade it to be the new AD domain’s...

MSN Messenger and What I am Listening To
I have been going back and forth between using XPlay and Windows Media Player or iTunes to manage my tunes and iPod. When I contemplated switching back to iTunes (XPlay was giving me numerous errors when syncing to the iPod) I was disappointed as I thought I would lose the “What I am Listening To” functionality in MSN Messenger. But lo and behold it integrates with iTunes as well to show what you are listening to. I like that. Microsoft could have left out that functionality out of spite...

Longhorn a Pleasing View
Apparently, Windows Longhorn has now been officially christened, er, marketed as “Windows Vista.” Read more here. IMO it could be worse. For me, this will take some getting used to. I have been saying and thinking Longhorn for so long, I had forgotten that was just a “code name.” BTW, someone has already pointed out that Vista means some strange things in other languages, like chicken, for example...

Samsung SCH-i730
I promised a couple of weeks ago I would blog a review of my new cell phone, the Samsung SCH-i730 from Verizon Wireless. So far, my experiences have been positive. The minor annoyances I have had have been more a result of using a RIM Blackberry for the past four years and making the transition to a new form factor and Windows Mobile 2003 2nd Edition. The highlights are a great data service, wifi (which I can enable and disable as needed – it is a battery drainer) and a slide-out qwerty-style...

New Cell Phone - Samsung SCH-i730
I got the specs on my new cell phone today – the Samsung SCH-i730 from Verizon. I have been using a Blackberry in its various incarnations over the past four years, my current model being the 7250 with Bluetooth which is a very nice unit. I am curious to see how the Windows Mobile experience compares. Unfortunately it comes stock with Windows Mobile 2003 instead of Mobile 2005. Hopefully it will be upgradeable. There is also a debate looming on the forums if it has its wi-fi disabled or only...

ISA Patch Caching
Here is another good post from John Howard’s blog (can you tell I like it?) discussing the upcoming filter for ISA Server 2004 that will cache patches downloaded from Windows Update so each user is not hitting your WAN connection for the request. This is especially useful in a shop that hasn't (or isn't going to) deployed WSUS yet...

Microsoft's Branch Office Infrastructure Strategy
Microsoft has a BOIS Link detailing their Branch Office Infrastructure Strategy (BOIS). This is a set of guides for architecting a remote office infrastructure. The guides include strategies and which Microsoft technologies best leverage those ideas. Like the branch office-friendly options built in to the new R2 version of Windows Server 2003 and ISA Server 2004. There is also a write up of it on John Howard’s excellent blog which I highly recommend subscribing to if you are an IT Pro...

WSUS Final Handed Out at Tech*Ed Keynote

Bags and Swag
So I got my swag-filled bag yesterday ... some people catalog all the swag on their blog, but for me there was too much and not enough time. :) There were several CD's (about 10) including Windows Server 2003 EE x64, Beta 2 of VS 2005 and a beta of the System Center Data Protection Manager. I want to fire that up on a VM. I think it has some really great features and will make managing my tape-farm\backups much easier. The bag itself is okay. I was hoping for a messenger bag or backpack. This type...

Tech*Ed Day One
I caught my plane out of Cincinnati at 1PM today and arrived in Orlando greeted by a thunderstorm. There is nothing like coming in from above the clouds expecting palm trees and sunshine and instead getting dark thunderclouds and pounding rain … and here I thought I might work on my tan too. I made my way to the hotel (I am at the Wyndham) and checked in. I then went over and caught the bus to the OCCC. I haven't been here since the last Tech*Ed. I think the convention is in an entirely different...
