Random Musing Putting it together one piece at a time...

While installing WSS 3.0, I came across another strange error when I try to start my Search Service in the server farm. For some reason WSS refuses to acknowledge that the machine is the indexer. The setup was on single a 64 bit machine installed as a server farm. After reinstalling and re-confirming that everything is where it should be, I decided to try the most unlikely reason why it fails.

I used the server name instead of its IP address when specifying the configuration. Strange enough, WSS stops denying the search service.

If you mean setting the servername where the Database Server name should be, on the 'Configure Windows SharePoint Services Search Service Settings on server xxx' page then this didn't work for me.
If you mean selecting the server on the 'Services on Server: xxx' page - then I have both the IP and servername listed but all the services are under the IP. And right now I can't find a way to change that.

To further confuse matters, the search service shows as stopped in the Central Admin, but shows as running in the Management console Services....

Hello,

I have got exactly the same problem, however I am not even using the IP number just standard names, so I do not think it is related to the IP numbers ...

Hi, i got the 'This server is not the indexer of this search application' in the foloowing scenario and i got rid of that error. My scenario is,

Installed MOSS 2k7 using Advanced as 'Complete'.
The same server has SQL Server 2008.
When i configure the SharePoint Product & Technology Wizard, I gave IP address of the loacal m/c as DB Server name.
When i try to 'start' WSS Search i got in to this error.

After one day of googling i got a solution of reinstalling the SharePoint, but giving Server Name for the DB rather than giving IP address, when it asks for Database while configure the SharePoint Product & Technology Wizard (initially).

If you have doubt, u can reach me through t.rishikesan@gmail.com

Hi t.rishikesan,

I have been trying to start the Windows SharePoint Services Search Service ,but i am getting the below exception
"This server is not the indexer of this search application ".

As u suggested we need to provide the Server name instead of SERVER IP while configuring. Now configuration done.

Can you suggest me how to do it now.
