Folks,

To go about this problem, do the following:
1. make sure that server and client use the same network protocol (enable TCP/IP).
2. Enable the service SQL Browser from your server.
3. Enable 'Allow remote connections' setting in the server.
4. check your server/workstation firewall.

Let me know if you have any luck with this.

Cheers,

Jimar,
I think step 3: Enable 'Allow remote connections' setting in the server. is the whole point of this request. How about posting the instructions for that step. 5/15/2007 7:37 AM | ds

I dont understand why I am getting this error repeatedly. I have two servers, both with sql server developer. Both have firewall turnon, both have a remote connection tunred on with tcp/ip selected. I can not access either servers and I get this error message below:
"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)"

Found out this whilst searching for an answer around

To enable remote connections:

Well, it turns out that this is controlled by an EXTERNAL utility, the Sql Server Surface Area Configuration Tool which can be found in Start Menu Sql Server Configuration section. By default Sql 2005 indeed refuses remote connections and you need to run this utility to enable remote connections. Intuitive isn't it? 11/2/2007 6:38 PM | Alex

This worked for me but I had to reboot SQL2005Express machine after making the change.
It would not work otherwise
