I've been configuring a new development box at work and ran into the strangest issue with Flash 9. I was deploying some new code for a video player on our website and started getting strange buggy behavior with the player. Some of the symptoms of the problem were as follows:

  • Video plays fast (over 2x the normal speed)
  • Video stops playing after attempting to use the time scrubber
  • Sometimes the video doesn't start at all

At first I thought the issues were with the updated code (obviously), but I tried the player on the live website and noticed the same issues. I was using FireFox so I tried it out in IE. Same issue. I then tried out Youtube and other video websites and had similar issues.

I don't have speakers attached to my computer so I wasn't aware of the lack of sound until I decided to put my headphones on. The soundcard was turned off in the BIOS and switching it on solved all the issues. Definitely a poor way of handling the lack of soundboard, but I guess they can rightly assume that all most all Flash users will have their soundboard setup.
