New Dell Computer Crapware

Today I got to unpack and set up my new toy.  After over five years of existing with the same old 1.1GHz P3, I finally got my brand new Dell XPS 400 -- Pentium D Dual Core 3GHz Processor 930, 4GB DDR2 SDRAM, 256MB nVidia GeForce 7800 GTX, and other toys -- Sweet!  I plugged in two 19-inch LCD monitors that I had ready, fired it up, and promptly got deluged with the Dell advertising crapware.

I had to read the startup configuration screen very closely to make sure I was not agreeing to AOL Broadband or NetZero dial-up.  I wanted to use my existing ISP.  Not to worry, I still had to view the AOL Broadband ad anyway since I chose to intentionally bypass the install.

Overall, not too bad, but lots more than past computers.  I especially dislike anything AOL.  I killed it off and uninstalled it as fast as I could.  In typical AOL fashion, they left an install link on the Start menu along with an install package directory that I had to delete manually.

Update: I also pulled some stuff out of the registry at HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.

What do I end up with on my new desktop?

  • Windows stuff (Recycle Bin, IE, Media Center, Windows Media Player)
  • Dell Documentation and Support; Games, Music, and Photos
  • Crap: AOL Free 6 Months, Internet Service Offers, NetZero - First Month Free!

Start Menu Crap:

  • MSN (twice)
  • America Online 9.0 (and subfolder)
  • Install Netscape Internet Service
  • NetZero - First Month Free!
  • InstallShield Update Service (it only updates itself and Corel Photo Album 6)
  • RealPlayer
  • WordPerfect Office 12

Background Process Crap:

  • AOL connectivity service (System level! Why would this ever need to be running in the background on every new PC?)

IE Shortcut Crap:

  • Real (3 links)
  • Dell (4 links)
  • MSN

Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs Crap

  • America Online
  • AOL Coach Version 1.0
  • AOL Connectivity Services
  • EarthLink Setup Files
  • ESPNMotion
  • Dell Get High Speed Internet!
  • Dell Internet Service Offers Launcher
  • NetZeroInstallers
  • RealPlayer
  • WordPerfect Office 12

I uninstalled all this since I never wanted it, will never use it, and feel much better with it gone.  Interestingly, Dell is shipping old versions of Sun Java (1.4.2_03 vice the current 1.5.0_06-b05) and Adobe Acrobat Reader (6.0.2 vice 7.0.8).  No Flash or Shockwave included either.  Who knows what else I will find strange about this new machine.

@larry: I do not have any commercials that run routinely. A look at my Start menu says that the Norton Ghost "Tour" is located at C:\Program Files\Norton Ghost\Shared\Tour.exe. I would just delete it or rename it if you think you may need it in the future.

The first thing I do every time I get a new Dell (I just bought one for my Dad and Granparents) is reinstall the OS. You will be chasing the "Crapware" (I love the term) forever if you do not. I particularly like how Wordperfect makes you go through an "upgrade now" splash sceen every time you launch it.

When I finally upgrade my own PC I'll be skipping Dell.

I just got my second and last Dell. It really is full of crapware and it's causing lots of problems. I keep calling to return the machine but Dell won't take it back. The fourth person I spoke with finally told me about AOL and GOOGLE!

I have had my DELL for little over 6 months now and I have had problems since day one. Anyway when I talk to DELL they always give me the run around. If I were them I sure would be helping my DELL customers for good reasons.. OH well! Last DELL I will OWN!
I am not real good with computers and my "TRIAL" thing was up and NONE of my MICROSOFT OFFICE, WORKS, WORD..etc... does NOT work. I bought this computer to put my daycare business on so that it would be save and easy but now I have to go another route....So do you know what I should do to get my Microsoft software back on here?

We've already had some experience with big, wide desktop monitors. One of them, the Sony GDM-FW900, is a CRT with a 24-inch diagonal display (22 inches viewable), but it's no longer manufactured (you can sometimes find refurbished units for about $1,200). LCDs have begun appear in widescreen format in the past couple of years, and these typically cost several thousand dollars. One of them, the Samsung 240T, weighs in at around $2,000. The best price we've seen for another, Sony's 23-inch SDM-232, was a bit over $1,600. And apple's 23-inch Cinema HD can be found for under $1,600 if you look hard enough.
Now Dell has decided to drop the price bomb. The UltraSharp 2405FPW 24-inch widescreen LCD will cost a measly (by comparison) $1,199. It's the classic Dell approach: Not pioneering a new market or category, but entering it later and at high volume, usually with a significantly lower price.

I agree that 90% of their customers don`t need all the software pre-included. I always install a fresh copy of Windows and personalize it how I want. I choose my antiviruses, players, etc, I want to use and don`t give a penny on their software they are trying to sell me.
