Microsoft Bob = Abandonware

When I look at my referrers list, I am amazed at the number of people who still search for this abandoned Microsoft product and find my post on Microsoft's April Fool MSDN RSS listing.  (Hint for all you searchers --- it was a joke.  The program was not posted for download.)

I was reminded of this today by reading Dvorak's latest column on “The Bottom 10: Worst Software Disasters.”  There, proudly at #10, is Microsoft Bob version 1.0a.  In case you did not know, Microsoft Bob 1.0a combined the contents of Bob 1.00 and the Bob 1.0 Plus Pack to give you "all of Bob" in one package.

If you need a dose of Microsoft Bob overload, check out this Everything Bob page as well as this one.  Be sure to scroll to the bottom to see how the author says Bob lived (lives) on.

Update 1: OK! OK! OK!  I'm still getting too many hits on this silly software.  Give it up people!  Someone actually got this Bob thing to run under Virtual PC.  Check out his blog entry here under the title Microsoft BOB lives!

Update 2: Let me try to make this clear. Microsoft Bob is Dead.  Dead as in no longer designed, programmed, produced, distributed or sold.  If you want it, you need to have Windows 3.0 or 3.1 as well as the hardware that could run it.  You also need the Bob software.  Look for Bob on eBay or at a computer show/swap meet.  I do not believe anyone would be caught selling it publicly again.  I fixed the Everything Bob link as well as adding another.

Bex: Web pages sometimes change their location. I found it again in about a minute from the site's main page.

Xynnia: I added some details for you in Update 2. Good luck. I have no knowledge or interest in trying to find a copy of such useless software.

# re: Microsoft Bob = i got original cd

i am currently holding the 'Microsoft Bob' cd in my hand as we speak (lol). It says 'Essential Programs for Everyday Home Computing', 'For distribution only with a new PC', 'Microsoft Windows(TM) COMPATIBLE', '(C) & (P) 1994 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.' '1294 Part No. 578xxOEM', 'compact disc CDRM128xx70'.

It used to work on my old computer with Windows XP, but no luck with my new Dell one. Theres some error regarding MS-DOS.

You do not have to have Windows 3.1, it was also designed for Windows 95 and as noted by the previous poster it works perfectly on XP as well.

Hello --

I just wanted to say that if it wasn't for this website, I would have given up on my search for Microsoft Bob. I thought that there was no one in the world that remembered that this program existed. Thank you so much for the recommendation for winhistory.de. I have the file downloading onto my computer right now.

Thanks so much!
(and also thanks to Google since this site came up when I searched)

Peace out.

Bob runs perfectly fine on XP even at a resolution of 1280x1024, with no tweaks needed, just can't use the mail (mci mail).
I think it's a blast, but not worth $99. Reminds me of the old Packard Bell Navigator (not to be confused with Netscape Navigator)

I just want to say that I miss Bob so much. Looking at screenshots of the program just a minute ago brought back waves of nostalgia that I haven't felt in a very long time. I used this program when I was in middle school, and I haven't forgotten about it. I'm really glad that there are others that miss this program! Sadly, I moved to a Mac platform, but I need to find a cheap PC to run this program on again!

I think this is corny, but it will make my girlfriend extremely happy. But hey, she thinks allot of the old school stuff I'm into is corny too. So it's all good, cause "nobody beats the Biz"!

The funny thing is that this is illegal. Everyone else is trying to rip Vista, Office 2007, IE7, Media Player 11, but we are trying to rip Bob. LMMFAO!!!

Hey Gates, if I get busted, bust me me out.

We rock.

Thanks for the download link for Microsoft Bob software. I've been looking for this for a long time, since it's already out of print. Yeah, it brings some nostalgia to me. At least now I can use this anytime I want. I don't care if it's outdated. This is an example of the good old times. Thanks guys! :)

@rita: No. This is a personal blog where I obviously made a mistake in posting something silly about the stupid Microsoft Bob. I would recommend CP/M over Bob any day. Can't you people just give it up already?

# re: Microsoft Bob = Abandonware

Give what up, it works perfectly except for a few things here and there because it is not compatible with modern microsoft software like outlook, etc. Here is the download link. Scroll down until you see it.

http://www.winhistory.de/downloads/downloads.htm

I got it running on my xp laptop decked out with StarDock widgets etc. It also works on my Vista believe it or not!

Not only that, this is where it really works perfectly and looks really nice. I got a DOS emulator running on my Pocket PC and I got MSBob running on it. It is possible to program your PPC to automatically start MSBob. Show this to the right woman and she will do what ever to get a hold of your PPC, lol.

If this woman was home schooled through this program back in the day, run away and dont look back no matter how cute and adorable she is. You dont want anything to do with her idiotic baba dna genes.

Trust me.

God damn f*ck*ng MSBOB.
