I can't wait for IMAP. POP3 sorta' flies in the face of what Gmail is trying to do... unless you turn off that delete from server bit after the mail is pulled from the server.

I thought about trying POP3 so I could use Microsoft Entourage 2004 (MS Outlook on OSX), but I've decided to just wait for IMAP.

You might need to wait for a while then.... I have been using GMail Pop3 for a couple days. I don't like it either. I have tons of mail to download. Once it failed, it will start from 1 again :S.

To make sure that it will work as expected, you might need to change the setting inside gmail pop3 to download only new mail from now on once you finish the first download :)

Nat, what e-mail client do you use? Reason I ask, I've been trying unsuccessfully to configure both Outlook Express and Microsoft Outlook and the only thing I get is an error message "host cannot be found".

With gmail, they have you enter specific port numbers for eac of the incoming POP3 servers, and the outgoing SMTP servers-and they also want you to check the box to use authentication. If you have trouble, Google "configuring Outlook with GMail." Click on the gmail.google.com/help link. It brings up pictures and instructions, it's great.

There appears to be some issue between Gmail and Outlook Express. I used the configuration information from the Gmail web site to set up OE but could not get it to play. Using the same information in Mozilla Thunderbird works just great.

Hi,
To configure
1. go to your gmail web account
2. click "setting"
3. goto tab "pop and forwarding"
4. enable pop forwarding
5. at the bottom, there is the "configuration instructions" link.
6. just following that link. teaches you manual config; even gives you tool to autoconfigure your outlook.

I want to configure outlook 2003, have done all well but the result is very worse. I've followed the instruction that are being given at gmail account, have also enabled the pop and forwarding...but when I do the testing or sending/receiving, an error of (0x80040900) is showing. It shows that sending request is complete but failed at receiving.
I'm connected to internet through other computer, using dial-up connection...

in regards to the problem with outlook 2002/2003 not sending email, i went onto the account settings and were the smtp prot is 465, i changed it to the norml default of 25, and now it sends fine every time. hope this helps someone, matt

I had the same problems when downloading e-mail trought pop3 protocol in OE.
Then i change to "Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on" and my problems gone. I can't download the 250 mail that are in the mailbox but at least from now on i will be able to leave the webmail behind my back. (i think).
If you think this could hlep you, go ahead and try it.

I had/have a persistent problem with GMail POP3: ''smtp.gmail.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 465, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 11001'."
This seems to be a DNS problem, as the URL (pop.gmail.com) is apparently not translated to the IP-adres by a DNS server.
A workaround is to fill in the IP address directly (instead of pop/smtp.gmail.com): 64.233.185.109.
It worked with me ...

I am using Pegasus to access my Gmail and this has worked OK until yesterday. Now when I download my newmail, I only get older mail, despite my having archived those messages and despite that they have been downloaded several times now!
I had some trouble earlier in the year when I accidentally downloaded some messages via Outlook and I could not get them to download again to Pegasus. I asked GMAIL for help but their reply didn't help. What I want is to see how to reset the POP flag on messages in my inbox so I can download them again. Can this be done? I think I managed to do some messages by moving them to trash and then back to the inbox, but I may have reset the Enable POP for all messages option?
Any suggestions??

I was having trouble sending Gmail via Outlook 2002. Recieving was fine, it just wouldn't send.

The solution that worked for me was the MS Office XP SP3 update, which updates Outlook 2002. Now I can send and recieve Gmail via Outlook no problems.

Just google "MS Office XP sp3," download, run the update, and test it out. Hope it works for you as well as it did for me.

I am using Apple Mail and set it up according the the instructions. I can send mail fine, it goes thru the outbox then shows up in the sent folder. I cannot receive the mail, however, until I go into the gmail website first and receive it there first. Any ideas?

I have followed all the guide mentioned above, but the problem still there. Using MS outlook 2003 conect via LAN, can't work with SSL. By unchecked the smtp and using default ( 25 ), sending is fine but not received. What should I do ? any other value other than 995 for pop?

Check My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication
Click Use same settings as my incoming mail server

Advanced Tab
Incoming server (POP3): 995
Outgoing server (SMTP): 587
Check This server requires an SSL-Secured connection for both

Change server timeouts to 5 mins

I have tried to send e-mail to book surge.com with attachments twice, and on both times 5/20; 5/21/07 some weird excuse has been given for non delivery e/g. POP3, SMTP, but I have DSL broadband from verizon.net which should cover all deficits with respect to POP3 and SMTP.
So please correct this wrong application to my e-mail, causing me a loss of business. I had full confidence in google.com when I signed up. Now I do not have such faith in the reliability.
Added to this you have hundreds of episodes on the help group, which is A COP OUT. THE CUSTOMER CAN NEVER BE SERVED WITH SUCH READING OF EPISODES AND GROUPS.
How insane can this help or support tech. server be ?

I was having the same problem. (Outlook 2002) I could reply via Gmail but I couldn't create a new email and send it. The email would stay in my outbox and not leave.

I did as Robgeezus wrote. In defiance of the Gmail configuration guidelines, I used 995 for pop and 25 for smtp.

Works perfect.

Can't send emails, can receive them fine, have tried every port combination in the book, ticked and unticked all sorts of boxes, downloaded all sorts of crappy patches - no success.

pop3: pop.gmail.com at port 995 currently
smtp: smtp.gmail.com at port 25 currently (changed that one a myriad of times).

Whenever I try to click send on an email, it says that I don't have any accounts configured for sending mail or some crap.

Help perhaps ?

Anyone that is getting an SSL error is obviously trying to connect from work and their IT department has port 995 blocked on the router so that employees can not check their pop accounts.

Or, the firewall has do not allow exceptions turned on. If so, add port 995 to the exceptions and mark allow.

think it has to do with changed IP address of your computer.

mine POP failed everytime my IP changed. Have to go to gmail.com, login, logout, and then the POP works again.

I'm all configured OK. SMTP (outbound) is unreliable, so I switched that to my local ISP (which allows unauthenticated use of its SMTP server).

Inbound too is unreliable (most days it's fine, but sometimes it times out) but it can't be switched to my local ISP as it's authenticated.

Hi friends!!

I am getting the above message while using Gmail throu Outlook Express or Outlook.

I am using Internet using CC Proxy installed on the server.

When we press send and receive the above message pops up and if we press YES, mails work fine but its annoying to press Yes everytime we press send and receive.

Please advise if anyone know how to get ride of that message.

I am experiencing chronic problems sending mail with attachments (under 1MB). I am set up with outlook and pop3. At first I thought the problem was outlook. I repaired outlook, repaired pst files, etc. Updated firmware router, rebooted. Nothing seems to help. I get error message

But then I realized that when outlook would not send, I also could not send the same attachment via gmail - indicates something is wrong on the Google Server side.
