Hi

I'm having problems with the defalt SQL Server 2005 CTP install. It will not let me progress past setting the sa password. Despite giving it a very secure password e.g. L0n$msq09#Srv789ui.

I'm sure I that all the hardware and software prerequisites have been met.

It just keeps saying that the password is not strong enough.

Any help would be appreciated.

Would you mind to send me a log file?

# re: SQL Server 2005 Installation And Issues 11/23/2004 4:46 PM Nat
1. Uninstall the older version of SQL Server 2005
2. Remove remaining files (including .mdf/.ldf files).
3. Reinstall 2005 CTP Oct

Hi Nat

I'm going to try and remove everthing again.
Where is the log file for the install held?

Cheers

I fouled up the installation of the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition February CTP. It detected visual studio and/or earlier SQL Server 2005 components. The error message says that I must run the build cleanup wizard from the CD and read the SQL Server CTP readme file.

Problem is, I can't find those two files anywhere on MSDN, having downloaded the CTP from the download center.

Can you or anyone else direct me (by email) to those files, please?

# re: SQL Server 2005 Installation And Issues 4/9/2005 12:32 AM Niko
We didn't include the uninstall wizard with SQL Express Feb CTP, but we will have it for the next Apr CTP coming out soon. For now you'll have to go to Add/Remove programs and manually remove the Visual Studio and SQL Express components. Make sure everything including the dotnet framework, J# redist, SQL Support files, etc are all removed and reboot your machine. Then install the Feb CTP files in this order:

Good luck

If you download the latest version of SQL Server 2005, it would use the same .NET framework version

I uninstalled the April version of SQL Server 2005 using sqlbuw.exe. Reboot the server and then installed June's version. I get through the whole install, but then want to run the management tool sqlwb.exe. It's greyed out as an icon and doesn't run. Any ideas??

# re: SQL Server 2005 Installation And Issues 6/29/2005 3:17 PM HB
MSDN says that Visual Studio 2005 June CTP is not compatible with the SQL 2005 June CTP.

Has anybody tried to install these components on the same machine and made them work?

I would like to try these two on the same machine but would like to hear somebody's feedback.

Also, with Visual Studio 2005 June CTP, will SQL 2005 Apr CTP work? What is the correct install order, including the the components i.e framework version? I have heard about the problems caused by the Sql 2005 Express Edition shipped with Visual Studio 2005 and SQL 2005 (not express but full CTP, Beta etc.). Could somebody detail out the solution to the above issues and successful installation experience?

Thanks

When i'm going to install sql server 2005 beta it gives me an error like 'there are some incompatible virsions of visual studio or sql server on my computer' but I have uninstalled the previous sql server version completely. Cleanup wizard also can't detect any such components to uninstall before sql server 2005 installation and it says 'you can install the sql server 2005'. can anybody help me.

# re: SQL Server 2005 Installation And Issues 8/8/2005 3:02 PM Henk Poell
About the SqlServer 2005 CTP: The problem with these installs is that the setup and cleanup tool inform us that "there is a previous .NET or whatever installation" but it doesn't give any clues which files, directories, registry entries or whatever should be removed (manually if nothing else helps) before it can proceed.

And no, the cleanup tool is not perfect... Apart from giving 1603 errors, the situation it leaves after finally not finding components anymore does not garantee that the setup will work.

So please MS, make the error messages a little better. Even something like "Setup could not proceed. Registry entry blah found" would be really nice.

I had to uninstall Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 that I already had, to install VS 2005 Professional Beta 2. By some stupid reason I forgot to uninstall SQL Server 2005 Express Beta 2, so now, it complains that it can't find .Net Framework 2.0 when I try to uninstall it. Attempts to use a fresh installer causes this error: The procedure entry point __CxxFrameHandler3 could not be located in the dynamic link library MSVCR80.dll

I installed SQL 2005 June CTP on a machine that already had SQL 2000 on it. Installed OK and new version seemed to work fine. I then tried to run some DTS packages within 2000 and none worked. So I removed 2005 and now I can't even get into the DTS Designer. Anyone else had anything similar?

Use Add/Remove Programs to remove the Client Tools for SQLExpress (which I guess were loaded up by VS2005). Then check the Client Tools box again (last box) in SQL Setup and it will fully install.

# re: SQL Server 2005 Installation And Issues 10/20/2005 9:57 AM Rixtr
Just a note that I have VS 2005 and SQL 2005 installed on the same machine, which happens to be a Windows 2003 Standard VPC with no previous versions of these products installed. YES - it does seem that it can be done, though some of the earlier comments are about different versions.

I installed Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2 first. I then tried to install SQL Server June CTP but this failed, advising about incompatible beta components, to run build cleanup wizard to remove previous SQL and .Net components and run CTP setup again. I couldn't find the build cleanup wizard on the SQL disk, so I uninstalled .Net Framework 2.0 Beta using Windows Add/Remove programs. SQL CTP then automatically installed .Net Framework and proceeded to the main installation, which went fine.

VS 2005 Beta 2 installs .Net Framework 2.0.50215.44, whereas SQL 2005 June CTP installs version 2.0.50215.312. This implies that it would probably work fine to install SQL Server first, then VS.

For those folks having problems, maybe you could install your VS 2005 version on a VPC and SQL Server 2005 version on the host, or on a second VPC. Thats what I had working initially.

Well... just downloaded the Visual Basic Express Edition "manual install" and burned it to CD.
Running setup seems sweet until the SQl server installation just quits with "INstallation of the SQL Server Express failed." Starting the SQL setup from the CD directly brings me to the dreaded "Still components installed" Message.
Manually checking my system, I find nothing.

Where is that cleaning tool?

After uninstalled the SQL Server 2005 Beta. I got an error message at the Workstation Components, Books Online and Development Tools process of the installation of SQL Server 2005 STD 32-bit. The message said "Error : A component that you have specified in the ADD_LOCAL property is already installed. To upgrade the existing component, refer to the template.ini and set the UPGRADE property to the name of the component."

I double checked and all the programs related to SQL server have been removed. I deleted all the keys at HLM for MS SQL Server in the registry, cleaned out all the Microsoft SQL Server folders in C drive. In Template.ini, I put "Client_components" at the "UPGRADE=". I uninstalled everything and reinstalled the software again..it failed at the same spot. I don't know what else to try....Please help...much appreciated....

Yesterday just before leaving work, I installed SQL Server Express 2005 and SQL Server Management Studio CTP. Everything seemed to be working fine, I powered down my PC for the day, and went home. Today I come to work to pick up where I left off, click the Management Studio icon, and the Management Studio won't run. It doesn't throw and error either. It acts like it's going to run the UI never comes up. I've rebooted, reinstalled, and nada. The Management Studio just won't run. Any ideas anyone?

I am seeing the problem that someone mentioned 2 comments back, i.e.SQL Server Management Studio is missing. I think further back someone mentioned that there might be an issue installing SQL Server 2005 on a Windows XP machine (which is what I am trying to do).

Up until today I did have the Express version installed and running and have uninstalled that (as well as the beta version of the .NET Framework 2.0) and have now installed SQL Server 2005, but it looks like most of the applications have not been installed - there is only a SqlManager.dll in the Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Binn directory.

Correction for my above comment - I was actually running SQL Server 2005 Beta and not Express as I mentioned above, but I am still having that issue.

Hi,

I have a query.
I installed SQL Server 2005 on a 32-bit machine with a 32-bit installable. But during the selection of components to be installed; all the options like 'Integration Services', 'Reporting Services' were inactive to be selected for installation, except the option 'Workstation components, Books Online and development tools'. But still all these services were installed as a part of installation. How can I selectively install only 'Integration Services' during the installation of SQL Server 2005?

Any ideas?

Regarding the "Error : A component that you have specified in the ADD_LOCAL property..." problem that Tracy mentioned. I've had the same problem. I've installed the client tools of SQL Server 2005 Express(free) above what had installed of SQL Server 2005 and then I tried installing again. Although it didn't fully succeed it did give another error and did install the components I needed. Maybe it would work fully if I'd uninstalled the express version again.

# re: SQL Server 2005 Installation And Issues 6/4/2006 7:51 AM Marimuthu
Regarding the "Error: A component that you have specified in the ADD_LOCAL property is already installed. To upgrade the existing component, ..." issue, please refer to the URL

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909967

And manually uninstall the SQL server and reboot the system. After that SQL server gets installed properly.

On a side note: I was really disappointed about the quality of the "SQL Server Installation" software from Microsoft. It really sucks and I have wasted lots of time with this setup issue...

Some random tips for installing sql server 2005 that fixed things for ME:
1. install from the CD or DVD, for various reasons i tried copying the install files to a SQL folder on the harddrive, it would then run through the install and mess up at the end without asking for the rest of the files, on disc 2, which is what it WILL do, if you install from disc 1 (or the DVD i suppose)
2. don't upload the files to a folder on your server with FTP -- dont ask why i did this, but it messed up some of the text files during the process.
3. i had a domain user account being used on another SQL server (sql 2k), which was working fine. i tried using this same account to run sql 2k5 on the other server, in the end, i never got this to work until i created a new account, nothing special about it, and used that to run the sql processes.
Maybe you're saying "duhh like im going to do any of that" but maybe this will save you some time :)

When you see that "sql server does not allow remote connection" message:
1. Open the SQL Surface Area Configuration tool on the server.
2. Choose Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections.
3. Find Remote Connections in the Database Engine and choose to enable your protocol.
4. Open Windows Firewall in Control Panel
5. Choose to add port 1433

Download windows install cleanup from microsoft's site. It saved me alot of headache after using it to delete related registry keys from faild installs so I could install fresh over it.

Hi,

Is there a way to install "Client Components" on "D Drive". I have been trying to specify a different location, but it puts all the files on "C Drive"..

Thanks for your help.

SQL Server 2005 CTP Setup has detected incompatible beta components from Visual Studio or SQL Server. You must run the build cleanup wizard from the CD to remove previous SQL Server 2005 components and .NET Framework components, and then run SQL Server 2005 CTP Setup again. For detailed instructions on uninstalling SQL Server builds, see the SQL Server 2005 CTP readme file

Has anybody experienced solving this problem?

SQL Server Setup could not connect to the database service for server configuration. The error was: [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified Refer to server error logs and setup logs for more information...

If so, plz tell me how to solve that,

Thanhks

Try running the MSI Cleanup utility. Even as the components are not installed, Windows Installer finds entries in registry, and therefore will not allow to install them. You can download it at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/290301

hi,
i tried installing Visual Studio 2005 from the link available for Visual Web Developer. During the installation I opted for SQL SERVER 2005 XPRESS EDITION to be installed as well. After installing Studio, when SERVER was being installed it gave an error message followed by a Blue Screen error and my system shutting down. When I reboot, it again shuts down automatically.

I formatted my System and tried installing SQL SERVER separately but again it failed and gave similar blue screen error.

Kindly let me know what can be done as a solution to this problem..

I installed MS SQL SERVER 2005 CD1 with no error but while installing MSSQL2005 CD2 , the Microsoft SQL SERVER Native Client setup Program Maintenance gives an option to Repair, Midify or Remove the program. If I choose Repair, it promptly finishes the installation successfullly but I don't see anything in Start->All Programs menu.

It was my one of several attempts to install and I used Windows install cleanup utility to clean SQL Server before installing.

pls suggest me how should i troubleshoot.

This article did help give me some background and in my instance i managed to solve it like this.

We already had an instance on SQL 2005 installed because of Trend, but upon installing SQL Server 2005 Standard the management tools didn't appear. When trying the advanced options you get a report saying unable to install due to upgrade from express to standar being prohibited.

The cure}

1: In Programs and feature modify pre exisating sql server 2005, and just select to remove the workstation components.
2: Rerun setup of SQL server 2005 standard and just modify install to install workstation tools and Voila...

Hope this helps you all

Having problems with a SQL Express installation -- installs okay but when I open management console I get something that looks like an error message with a yellow triangle and exclamation point but nothing in the message. When I click ok management console opens but some programs have problems connecting. I've uninstalled and reinstalled with the same result. Any suggestions?
