Blujay 100% Free Online Marketplace

Tuesday, February 15, 2005 10:20 PM

I've been looking for new alternative sites for eBay to recommend auction sellers and use myself also.  While I was comparing sites which do not charge any listing fees or final value fees for the items listed, I have seen Blujay being a step further than some other new sites.  Blujay had several advantages compared to other online market places.  Blujay's system is similar to what we call classifieds systems.  Some advantages I've experienced during using Blujay are:

  • Very easy to register, and activate your account. You don't need a credit card on file, or provide your actual address to be able to list your items.
  • One page listing is one of the easiest I've ever seen on auction and classifieds sites.
  • Blujay creates froogle feeds for your items and automatically submits them to Froogle.  I've checked Bluejay's Froogle results and there are already almost 1400 items confirmed and listed by Froogle.
  • You have flexible listing day options such as 7, 14, 30, 60 and 180 days. 180 days option is a very rare to find at other classifieds sites, and if you have regular items in stock, it's a great way to list them all with 180 days duration.
  • You can upload up to 4 photos for each item for free which is a big save from image hosting costs for sellers.
  • As soon as you register with Blujay you get a free web store and your own URL to give to your customers such as blujay.com/yourusername .  Free webstore option is always a plus to organize your items within one storefront page and let your customers find other products offered by you.

After reviewing Blujay, first I was suspicious about the whole system. Because all of these features would cost a big time to the site owner, and they claim to offer everything for free and they insist that Blujay will stay free.  So I have contacted Adam, the owner of Blujay, and discussed about my concerns and questions.  And I've seen that he is a hard working guy with a great project, and willing to help online sellers.  Here's some information Adam has sent me about Bluejay:

Blujay blujay.com, the free online fixed price marketplace which allows the small business and individual seller to reach their buyers over the internet, finally releases the service for the public to use. After years of development and months of testing, blujay.com announces that the service is ready for the small business to start selling on the internet for free which would otherwise cost hard earned money on other sites.

"Small businesses already have very slim margins for what they're selling. We believe that selling online should be free, just like searching online, or emailing your family. Releasing this service is our effort to further that belief," says Henderson Hsieh, marketing spokesperson at blujay.com.

blujay.com offers features that cost big money on other sites.
In order to help the small business & individual seller to reach buyers online, the service allows them to open a webstore with a simple url "blujay.com/username" for free. Additionally, the service provides space on the storefront where the seller can include a physical store address, phone number or even a brief description of what they sell.

Some other features the service provides include item management tools, item listings with up to 4 photos, and item listings lasting 180 days. By comparison, on other sites each of these features is considered an "upgrade" on top of listing fees or monthly storefront fees being charged. For instance, thumbnail images in search results costs $0.25 & each additional photo costs $0.15 for each item on ebay. These types of fees quickly add up to significant amounts. On blujay.com, everything is free.

Sometimes auctions don't work.
Not everything for sale on other sites sells because the item doesn't find the right buyer in the 7 days of an auction or 30 days of a classified. By allowing a seller to list their item for 180 days, the blujay.com service allows more exposure and therefore increases the chance that a seller will find the right buyer.

About blujay
blujay.com is the free photo marketplace that offers the small business & individual seller the tools, services, & features needed to reach their buyers over the internet. A seller can list items with 4 photos each and refer people to their store via a simple link "blujay.com/your_username" all for Free.

If you are already selling online, or want to try, I'd highly recommend to check out Blujay.com . Here's the Blujay Storefront I've setup to test the system prior to writing this article.  I will be spending some time listing at Blujay and supporting this new venue.

Has anyone noticed how fast blujay is growing? Check out Bluejay's Froogle results - as of March 22, 2005, there are 10,400 items up on froogle, way up from the 1400 items mentioned in the original post above [ and that origninal post was when, about one or two months ago? Pretty amazing. ].

I signed up to sell on blujay on march 1st, and I've sold 2 textbooks already, and both buyers found me through froogle. Not bad, considering that it's not really textbook season right now.

One other thing - that one page listing feature? I've never seen anything like it! It's incredibly easy to post, and IT IS FAST!

I found Blujay through an article in Budget Living, and just in time! I was barely making a profit after all of eBay's insertion fees, upgrade fees, final sale fees, and finally, Paypal's fees. Whew!

I just signed up today and listed a few things. Tonight I plan on listing some more.

- This is really run by just 2 guys? - Incredible! 6/9/2005 5:34 PM | sierraskyesmom

Blujay seems dead in the water. It's a lovely site, easy to use and has lots of fantastic features, but they are not advertising or promoting the site. 7/27/2005 4:36 PM | Celeste

I found bj by accident on a search for vintage Taxco Sterling from Mexico. I signed up to open my store since I already sell on other sites as well. sent a few emails to the support center -- a week later no response to any of the emails. I then do a search for the items I listed and nothing comes up on google or as they stated it would, on froogle. even when I search using the exact item title. this could be good however not when people cant find you. I read a blog above that said just 2 guys operate this entire site. Well boys here is a msg to you... I would be glad to help you in any way possible but YOU have to make sure my items can be found or I and all the other sellers will be quite disgusted and be unable to stay on your site, regardless of being free or not. who wants to spend hours listing if no one can find you??? not I. so boys lets get it together -- we have come this far.. lets go further! :) 3/5/2006 4:17 AM | jenny cestero

# re: Blujay 100% Free Online Marketplace

I am a potential buyer for Bluemoon. I was interested in her Watergate Chess Pieces. I have been trying to get her to respond to my questions for over two months. I wanted to know if the set was sill available, what the shipping and handling fews would be to my residence, and what form of payment she preferred. I even created several invoices at no avail. She has over 280 views so other potential buyers are looking at her store, also. I've only been following her since February and her Store time has expired twice since then. And now her Store is back for a third time. Still she doesn't answer any of my messages. Is she a Phantom Seller? Why does her store keep coming back after it expires? Surely she must know that she has a dialog problem that needs to be addressed and why isn't it? If she's not going to fix these problems then why is she allowed to renew her store? Any advice for a frustrated buyer?

Stay away from this website!!! The owner doesn't care about it, or you. He lets other members get bashed, harassed, and even slandered. So once again I warn you "Stay Far Away"! 5/22/2008 9:17 AM | Not Needed

I to sell on Blujay and love it! Yes there has be some squabbles in the forums from time to time BUT 99% of the sellers there are working hard to make the site the best!! Do we disagree yes...do we get past our different view points to join together for the bigger picture YES!
Like any other site you have a few trouble makers and bad bad sellers (lord knows eBay has their share!) but again, I think you will find that blujay is quickly becoming one of the top selling sites around!
Stop in and see for yourself!

# re: Blujay 100% Free Online Marketplace

blujay is a simple and easy site to use, however, there is absolutely NO CUSTOMER SERVICE in any way, shape or form there! The site and the forum is a free for all! The TOS is disregarded and prohibited items are all over the site! Spam and inappropriate posts overwhelm the forum! Without supervision and customer support, the site will never reach it's potential! 6/16/2008 12:41 PM | seller

# re: Blujay 100% Free Online Marketplace

I would like to add that blujay is not a secure site; it does not have ssl certification; it has no security measures in place, and is a risky place to do business! Also, emails to support and administration are ignored, and in some cases, it has been well over a year that sellers have been waiting for a reply!! Customer support is non-existant!! The owner of blujay has pretty much abandoned the site! blujay is on auto-pilot and spinning out of control! Prohibited items are listed in every category and even show up on the home page as featured items! The forum was very good, but has turned into a big joke, and after months and months of many sellers emailing admin, nothing has been done! 6/16/2008 12:53 PM | seller
