Helping the Small Blogs

There are by some estimates more than a million weblogs. But most of them get no visibility in search engines. Only a few “A-List” blogs get into the top search engine results for a given topic, while the majority of blogs just don’t get noticed. The reason is that the smaller blogs don’t have enough links pointing to them. But this posting could solve that. Let’s help the smaller blogs get more visibility!

This posting is GoMeme 4.0. It is part of an experiment to see if we can create a blog posting that helps 1000’s of blogs get higher rankings in Google. So far we have tried 3 earlier variations. Our first test, GoMeme 1.0, spread to nearly 740 blogs in 2.5 days. This new version 4.0 is shorter, simpler, and fits more easily into your blog.

Why are we doing this? We want to help thousands of blogs get more visibility in Google and other search engines. How does it work? Just follow the instructions below to re-post this meme in your blog and add your URL to the end of the Path List below. As the meme spreads onwards from your blog, so will your URL. Later, when your blog is indexed by search engines, they will see the links pointing to your blog from all the downstream blogs that got this via you, which will cause them to rank your blog higher in search results. Everyone in the Path List below benefits in a similar way as this meme spreads. Try it!

Instructions: Just copy this entire post and paste it into your blog. Then add your URL to the end of the path list below, and pass it on! (Make sure you add your URLs as live links or HTML code to the Path List below.)

Path List

  1. Minding the Planet
  2. Luke Hutteman’s public virtual MemoryStream
  3. Mohammad.Abdulfatah, Chronicles Of
  4. Anand M, DotNet From India
  5. Teucer's Quiver
  6. Sudhakar's Dev Notes
  7. The Real World of Software Testing
  8. Kirtok's Official Fan Site, Personal & IT Blog
  9. (your URL goes here! But first, please copy this line and move it down to the next line for the next person).

your message doesn't have the standard "if you don't do this, you'll have some horrible tragedy" or "if you do this, Microsoft will send you $1,000" message that i expect to see at the bottom of this type of message... :)

haha... actually, this is a pretty cool idea... and at the same time is an actual useful permutation of the classic chainmai.

We will see if it works :) if it works, then we can also add sth like "Send $1 to each user in the list" :) and you never know, maybe we'll be so rich, we won't have to program any more. Take care

Now right off the bat, I have to say that to me, this is nothing more than a variation of the chain letter. However, I suppose that in a perfect world something as crazy as this Web site positioning scheme...

No offense, but this probably won't work. To get your website ranked higher, you really need to have other "well-ranked" sites link to your site. While having someone with a Google rating of say, 4 link to you will probably help you (because the spiders will follow the link here), it probably won't help the other person at all because your blog is still ranked at 0--most likely because it's new and hasn't been spidered, or maybe because you've never submitted it to search engines, or you don't have good meta tags, etc.

Besides, with your case scenario, you're not actually "linking" to the visitors' sites--unless you're changing your original post every time someone takes your post (which you probably wouldn't even know) and puts it on their site.

If you're really trying to increase your blog's page ranking, you'd do better to run a blogroll and exchange links with other bloggers, or to leave comments on popular blogs with your site listed along with the comment. When the popular blogs get spidered, they will run across your link and come to your site for indexing. In theory, the more you do these two things, the more links back to your site you will have and the better your chances are getting to the top of the rank listings.

Hope that helps!

I'm not trying to increase my blog's page rank or anything. I saw this thing on sbd else's blog and remembered the old days of those crazy chain letters. I just wanted to put it up for fun. This is a personal blog, and I will just have fun here, I really don't care about pr or people reading it. thanks for the suggestions but :)

Surely this only promotes visibility in proportion to a blog's existing popularity?
Like a pyramid marketing scheme, it will benefit those at the top of the tree (that's you!), if enough other people visit their pages while the idea is fresh and decide to play.

Keep thinking, though.

:) thanks for reminding. I will try to keep thinking. You guys are awesome, if you weren't there how would my blog score high freakin' page rankings... you guys just rock. This "helping the small blogs" project was my most important IT project since 1974.
Fred, specific thanks to you for helping me and reminding me to "THINK", your ideas blew my mind man, you are a genious.
Kim, thanks again for your very smart theory "No offense, but this probably won't work." if you weren't there I wouldn't be here right now :)
Derick you are the only one man who's stupid enough to believe in me :)
you all made my day, don't worry about it. I will take care of myself :)

As someone who just started their first blog two day ago I say thanks! It will be interesting to see how long if ever it takes people to find my blog and I wonder if they will find anything interesting. I'll keep posting as long as I have something to share and see what happens. Thanks again for the consideration.

Hey, in line with your comments, I thought this would be great to add to your blog. I haven't set my blog up yet, but I will be adding this to it! It should help out a small online auction! Check out www.BidMax.co.uk. It's a cool concept where you try and buy stuff for a fraction of the price by paying to submit a bid to a 'maximum bid auction'. Obviously, they make a profit - they're not giving stuff away. But, they've got a car on there for £250, a big screen TV for £100, all sorts of stuff for nothing. I thought it was worth a shot, so placed a couple bids myself. Hope I win the Car!

Good ideas here and thanks. It seems to me that the proliferation of ebooks is tied into the readers out there and these need work. People who read, also like to curl up with a good book and they complain that this is not possible with the ebook readers. It seems tgo me that when the push came for ebooks it was not matched with the quality of readers that could make ebooks fly.... What can be done to improve readers in your opinion?
