$%#(@)!*@)#%!
So I spent a good part of this week off and on tracking down an issue with Team Build. I started with a website project that referenced a compiled DLL (not a project). Once I added the web deployment project and tried to build it with Team Build, I got the following error: Build FAILED. áASPNETCOMPILER : error ASPCONFIG: Could not load file or assembly 'RichTextBox, Version=3.1.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=17b15412cfbf... or one of its dependencies. Access is denied. áASPNETCOMPILER : error ......

VSTS Panel on .Net Rocks

At Tech Ed I was asked to sit on a VSTS panel for Carl Franklin and Richard Campbell for .Net Rocks. The panel consisted of my good friend Steve Borg, Joel Semeniuk, Doug Seven and I. Barry Gervin also helped with questions from the audience. Go check it out when you have a chance.

Merging by Label in Team System
A while ago I posted that merges by label in TFS Source control do not take into account deleted files. While at Tech Ed at few weeks ago I had a chance to "share my feelings" about this issue with members of the product team. Feeling relieved and somewhat embarrassed, I set out to find a workable solution for this dilemma. After some thought and playing I put my solution out to the VSTS Champs list to verify what I was going to suggest. áHere is the method that I used to make sure that files deleted ......

Team System Community Discussion
There is an internal list that Microsoft created to help communicate with members of the VSTS Community. Recently after several members of the list got together in Orlando for Tech Ed, Brian Randell had the idea of beginning discussions among members of the community and the product group and publishing these discussions for everyone to see. We are going to start our first one at the beginning of July and I will post with the Topic and a link as soon as it is released. Happy Coding ......

Tales from the Road
I was lucky enough to attend training in France in April. While doing the lab work, I could not figure out why all of my typing seemed so bad. I figured I was just badly jet lagged, but I found out on day two of the training that all of the laptops supplied for the class had French key boards! áNot only are some of my favorite keys moved, but there are several additional keys added to the right side of the key board. I caught a break when I found a switch in Windows (Windows 2000 I might add) that ......

VSTS Widgets page has a new look!

It looks like my buddies over at Accentient have been hard at work on the widgets page for Team System. It has a nice new look, a search feature, and new friendly URL and a subscribe option. If you want to get a good idea of the universe of tools available for VSTS go check it out.

Tech Ed 2007
Last week I had the pleasure of attending Microsoft's Tech Ed conference in Orlando as a staff member. I was also invited to participate in the Speaker Idol competition which was hosted by the guys from .Net Rocks. It was a really good experience and a lot of fun too. I had the chance to meet a lot of people that I only talk to via email and was able to catch up with some of my friends from all over the world. I was also able to do a Chalk Talk session on Friday on VSTS Process Templates. Here are ......

Orcas to support Katmai
Visual Studio Team System 2008 will be able to run on SQL server 2008. While continuing to support SQL Server 2005, VSTS will not take advantage of any of the new features of Katmai, but future releases will. Time to start looking at Katmai! Happy Coding!

Puerto Rico
I had the pleasure of visiting the island of Puerto Rico this past weekend. I flew from Orlando after Tech Ed down to San Juan to hang out with some of my good friends who were promoting a Bon Jovi concert. I got there so late on Friday that I could barely keep my eyes open, but Saturday we all had a long day of lying out at the beach. Saturday night, we went to Old San Juan and hit the night life. What a blast! I can't wait to go back and see more of the island. One of the cool things that are unique ......

Interesting Issue with VSTS SP 1

I ran into an issue with SP 1 for Visual Studio 2005. I installed the service pack before I installed Team Explorer. I installed Team Explorer today and when I connected to my Team Foundation Server I got errors doing some simple source control operations (checking in). I just re-installed the service pack again and it fixed my problem.

Playing nice with others
With Visual Source Safe, it was certain death for any project enabled multiple checkouts. It was simply too difficult to merge changes from different developers back together. With Team System, Microsoft has made a strong effort to make merging files together much easier. But there are some things to think about when working with a project that has multiple checkouts enabled. Let's take a quick look at checking out files in Team System. When checking out files you have three lock options. The "None" ......

Excel makes Team System easier!
So what happens when you create a long list of Bugs or Task in Team System and realize that you have not used the correct naming convention or you have assigned the wrong priority? Well Team System gives you an easy way to handle batch updates of work items. Because Team System integrates into Microsoft Excel, you are able to use Excel to handle such changes. Even better, you can select work items within Team System and edit them directly in Excel. Do update several work items at once, do the following: ......

Party with Palermo
I got into Orlando for Tech on Sunday night. On the VSTS Champs list, we decided that we would all meet the first night at Party with Palermo. Man it was a blast!!! Thank goodness I didn't have a session on Mondayà Here is a picture from my Dash of Ed Hickey (Microsoft) and Mickey Gousset (Notion). Happy Coding ......

Word Press and Word 2007
I simply hate writing blog posts in my web browser. I have known about the ability in Word 2007 to write documents and post them to your blog, but I have been just too busy to do anything about it. I am stuck in Orlando after Tech Ed and I decided that I would give it a try. I downloaded Word Press and installed it on my server and then I set up my blog. Word Press is written PHP and is free so the positive cancels out the negative. ;) It was a fairly painless process and now I am writing this post ......

To update you all, I did not win speaker idol. :(á I did get invited to sit on a panel of VSTS folks for .Net Rocks and was interviewed for a new site that I will post on soon. A very cool thing is that I was asked to fill in for my friend Mickey Gousset for a session called Tips and Tricks for Editing youráProcess Template.á I am in the presentation room right now!
