I am one of the most devoted persons to sports there is.  I love playing, watching and talking about a wide range of sports, but I have to say I have now had it with this NHL lock out.  I can't believe what absolute babies many of these NHLers are.  It is not that they are sooo out of touch with the value of a dollar, but they are greedy, plain and simple.  I understand the need to pay professional athlete a premium to mitigate the risk of a short career, but million dollar condos, luxury vehicles and pets that cost more than $500 per month (says Mike Madano) is simply ridiculous.  Sure, some players do a lot for the community, but is that really sacrifice?  I've got twenty million and I give a million to charity - a heroic effort indeed.  So I will end my rant by saying this, get all the greedy players out of these negotiations.  Sure Linden, the NHLPA president, may be one of the most articluate people in the league, but he is by no means a shrewd businessman.  There is no reason salary should not be tied to revenue, look at the NFL they do it.  Their league is flourishing and their players are STILL OVERPAID.

I have the fortunate pleasure of coaching my son's Termite (6 and under) hockey team with Jim McKenzie who is a winger for the Predators and 15 year NHL vet. His take on this is that the idea of tieing the salary to revenue isn't bad, the problem comes in getting the owners to be "honest" about the revenues. Things like concessions, hats and t-shirts and in the Predators case, income from other events at the arena (the Preds get a fee for every event). Teams have a habit of setting up companies that take in this revenue so it doesn't show up on the team's books. This is also a problem in the NFL, just not talked about much.

Everyone wants to make as much in salary as you can. You do, I do and the NHL players do. It has become more of a trust issue then anything at this point.

I agree with your argument, however, I beleive the problem of dishonest bottom lines is a derivative of player holdouts everytime another semi comperable player gets a raise and owners who try to buy a team and thus inflate the average wage accross the league.

I also agree everyone wants to make as much salary as they can, but I also beleive there comes a point when success starts to cross the border to greed. A fine line no doubt, but it does exist.

I agree with you both, but the hockey 'negotiations' are proof that both sides can be wrong -- both owners and players recieve more money than they deserve for what they do in society. But, they are not at the bottom of what's to blame for the ridiculous situation we find ourselves in in pro sports (and entertainment in general). THE FANS ARE TO BLAME, plain-and-simple. They continue to fork out stupid amounts of money for tickets, arena food & beer, novelties and sports-stuff; all to watch, support and oogle over millionaires having fun PLAYING A GAME FOR A LIVING -- then complain about tax increases for social programs, health, education and infrastructure. The players and owners, contrary to popular belief, are more intelligent than fans -- they are willing to lockout and/or strike to get more, while fans are not smart enough to boycott to bring the whole thing into reason with other jobs in society! Fans need to get a life!! and get their priorities straight!

I tend to side with the owners. I think they made a terrible mistake in 1994 with the original CBA, but they have come to realize what needs to be done to fix it. They have learned from their mistake. I just wish the players could do the same!
