It’s been a while since I blogged about my experience going through the interviews for a permanent position as a Microsoft Premier Field Engineer. It was tough to hear that I did not get offered the job as there was one other “hopeful” that ended up being a closer match then myself. I had been contracting for Microsoft in Ireland and Belgium for 2 years by that time and applied, roughly, to 22 different positions throughout my career.

Imagine my surprise when I received a call that there were new positions open and the hiring manager wanted to know if I was still interested in coming aboard! Not only that, I could come and work as a PFE in the messaging field! I was a bit dreadful to go ahead with it but ended up sending in my application (once again Angry smile) and a couple of interviews, luckily not the same amount as before, I got a call. A call telling me I was offered the position if I still wanted it!

For years I’ve been working towards this and caught a break with starting contract work for PSS Messaging Ireland and Microsoft Services Belgium. To be offered a job as a PFE in the Messaging field is somewhat a dream come through for me…

I was warned though! The first year (and a half) will be brutal. The level of knowledge you need to function as a Premier Field Engineer is unmatched in the industry and will require a lot of time to study and keep up to date. Don’t accept the job just to get a job at Microsoft, accept it if you want to learn & devote a lot of time in to getting to know the technology inside out. Luckily for me, it never was about “a job at Microsoft” as I am one of the few persons who can get a job anytime.

At this point I’m happy to say that I accepted and am starting at Microsoft Ireland in February. Not only that, I get shipped of to Paris for a 2 week “Exchange RockStar” training! Exiting times! This also means I’m, once again, moving to another country. The boxes have arrived and packing has started, luckily our current landlords have been very understanding as well as my current employer. Even with me having been here only since October last year. Hopefully I won’t move again for another couple of years, both my girlfriend and me have gotten very tired of it…

Being a member of the microssoft team is really a great honor and a unique experience also.

It will definately be a unique experience. Yet I'd disagree with the honor part. Whilst it is very prestigious (and I'm very exited about it) I worked hard for the role. I've pretty much gone from contracting for Microsoft to being employed by Microsoft.

Becoming a PFE is something I really wanted to do for a long time now, the chances and technical knowledge I can obtain are massive. Now all I have to do is study hard for the next year or two to keep the job. And then I can study some more :)

Hi Marc, I am glad that you have landed the position as PFE in Exchange. I am currently in the same process now and need your advice on how to get prepared in the second technical interview as I have just passed the first one. This position is unmatched in its technical level to any other exchange positions anywhere else. I wonder how tough the interview will be and about.

I appreciate your kind support in advance :)

Joe,

Congrats on getting to round two! I think the most important thing to remember is that, no matter how much you prepare, you are never prepared! Don't try to pick up new things as you will mess them up.

Don't be afraid to say you don't know the answer to a question. It is better to admit that you don't know something than to answer with something that will be completely wrong...

Probably your interview will be more indepth than the first one!!

Good luck!

Well, can you give me examples of how deep are the questions?

Joe,

That really depends on the person who is interviewing you as there are no set interview questions (not that I know of...) so it could be anywhere from "how does an email get written to the database" to "what are version buckets"
