Windows 7 BSOD - some things never change ;)

After my previous blog posting asking for the old and familiar "Classic" start menu, it seems as if my VPC of Windows 7 has a sense of humor and obliged me with an old familiar BSOD...my first Windows 7 BSOD!

For all the changes to things over the years with the Windows systems, this is one old standby that hasn't changed a bit.

Windows7BSOD

I ended up going into Windows normally but this process was repeatable and the next time I went to shut down my Windows 7 VPC I got the same BSOD. So it looks as if I have found a bug...though I'm not sure what it is.

Here's Windows 7 running in Safe Mode:

SafeMode

Here's a detail screen of the Event Log entries that correspond to the BSOD.

CriticalError

And finally here's a detail view of the Bugcheck details for this error. FWIW I sent those details to Microsoft's error checking online repository and I've saved the memory dump, but I'm not that well versed in going over memory dumps.

BugDetail

The error only cropped up since I installed some software since last night and only happens when I go to shut down the VPC. It stays for a LOOOOONG time on the "Shutting down" screen then BSODs.  It's happening over and over again (3x so far) so I'll just start uninstalling software on the Windows 7 VPC until it shuts down cleanly again. FWIW here's the software I've installed on it so far:

JKDefrag, Windows XP Virtual CD ROM Control Panel and Virtual Clone Drive.

Yes it's real. I'm working to figure out what's caused it, but I assure you I'm not making the screenshot to poke fun at Windows. I like Windows 7 so far.

I believe there are still issues running Windows 7 on Virtual PC. No way to install it on the metal?

Glen - I'm planning to install it on the metal later tonight or this weekend. I'll be sure to test things out again on real box.

I've heard others have had problems with Win7 using VPC extensions. Since they change the virtual drivers, I can understand the blue screen because bluescreens are often caused by driver incompatibilities.

The BSOD for 7 is real. I just tried to install it and well, suprise suprise. BSOD. I was trying to upgrade rather than start fresh. I've saved my previous stuff on another HDD just in case. Maybe she's not upgradable yet, eh?

I keep getting the BSOD also. It happens every hour and a half or so and I don't know the reason why. Also, iTunes and Explorer are freezing when I try to add songs to an iTunes playlist. This happens every single time. Does anyone know how to rollback to my previous version of Windows?

I got 3 BSOD's so far in the first hour or so. The error reads: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. I had to catch it with my camera because it flashed by too quickly (less than one second) before restarting. TDX.SYS was mentioned, and I suspect this has to do with the software I installed to access an external hard drive plugged into my router via USB. I have a Belkin N+ Wireless Router (connected to my computer via a hardwire) and their supporting software is called Storage Manager. I haven't gotten a BSOD for about 15 minutes so far since uninstalling the program and disconnecting the mapped network drives it created.

In my XP box, the only reasons I've ever gotten DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL for, was due to my RAM. 1st time there was some kind of dirt between the DIMM contacts on my RAM chip and the ones in the Mobo, second time (with a dif. computer) was because I had been overclocking the RAM and it became unstable, so that Windows crashed during boot.

I thinks its Virtual Clone drive (in fact, it seems that nearly every CD/DVD mounting program has a major compatibility problem). I had a similar issue where the computer would not be able to shut down if I had attempted to use Virtual Clone Drive or MagicDrive. Before installing MagicDrive, Windows even warned me about the drivers MagicDrive tried to install, and it wouldn't even let me install Daemon Tools (which I tried as an alternative for mounting images).

When I managed to get MagicDrive installed, I started getting BSODs when resuming from sleep.

As for not shutting down, Windows Vista and Windows 7 are supposed to force terminate processes that stop the shutdown process, but, of course, they built in certain exceptions (which only programs that really really need it could use, such as Media Center. Unfortunately, some sloppy programmers have on occasion, taken advantage of that to make sure their programs aren't terminated by the shutdown, which became a problem for Vista).

To fight that, Win 7 has a new function allowing you to check what process might be appealing to that exception to stop the shutdown. If you open command prompt as Administrator, and type "powercfg.exe/requests", it will explicitly tell you what annoying process is intentionally interfering with shutdown.

When I installed mounting software like MagicDrive, I discovered those programs were listed as exceptions to stop the Windows shutdown process until they were ready. They were listed as "Legacy Kernel Drivers."
Just a case of bad/selfish programming on the part of MagicDrive, I suppose.

I did a system restore to completely eliminate those programs and have since vowed not to use them until compatible software is released.

Unfortunately after installing windows 7 on bare metal I can only confirm the issue. After long, long hours of troubleshooting using well known method "try & error" I've found that video driver was the black sheep of the WHQL family. Rolling back to standard VGA driver solved the issue at unacceptable price of loosing a lot of video performance.

Some things do really never change!

I get a BSOD 5 minutes after logging in when I have a mapped drive to my Buffalo NAS. No, mapped drive, no BSOD and everything run excellent.

I have been running Windows 7 in a dual boot for a couple weeks, with Free AVG and a couple mapped drived without any issues.

3 days ago, after an AVG update, AVG asked for a reboot and after that, when i map a drive, BOOM, BSOD every 5 minutes.

BSOD: tdx.sys DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Same here! Lacie network space NAS, gives BSOD (TDX.sys / driver_IRQL_...).

Is there a solution now?

I have also had the tdx.sys error, and although it might at first appear to be a netwirk driver issue, it is in fact related to having an external NAS mapped to the computer. As soon as I unmapped the drive, the BSODs stopped.

Well i have the same problem, as far as i can read on forums and other places online that it has to with the anti vir software of choice.

I have a LaCie Networkspace 1T drive and it seems to be working OK with eset antivir software but im not saying it will for long. Im currently looking for a free AV that will work (updating network drivers will help also)

Windows 7 BSODs when using some kinds of antivirus applications, and/or mapped networkdrives. Install this update to fix the problem:
