WPF

Windows Presentation Foundation. A huge new part of Vista that gives it the groovy look and feel to make it both a MacOS and Flash killer. WPF will emerge early next year on other platforms as well, being called "WPF/E" with the E part standing for "Everywhere".

A message out to the Silverlight crew -- Thank you for putting some real backing behind the Linux version in today's press release announcing Silverlight 1.0! This is *fantastic*! Also thanks go out to Miguel and his crew for their tireless efforts to get Moonlight up and running. This is so great to hear that Silverlight will truly be supported as a cross-platform solution. (And pardon me, Microsoft, for saying that this is somewhat out of character for you, and in a very good way!) I expect there's...

Oh, I guess it was. But along the way you have to deal with a misleading error message: So it ends up it was really installed, and thinks it needs a restart. But it doesn't. It works fine at that point. Just refresh the page where you tried to use Silverlight and up it comes

Can't believe how fast the time has flown leading up to this big event. I've been so busy with all the details of getting a huge screen rented, insurance lined up, advertising in place, and more. What a blitz. We were lucky to be able to rent a really nice theater in Arizona, Symphony Hall in the downtown. Now it's just about showtime. If you're in the area and haven't signed up for the event yet then take a look: http://azgroups.com/uber07 It's worth taking a sick day at work to come and join in...

Learn Silverlight from ScottGu himself! Did you miss MIX? You're in luck. AZGroups has one big "Uber" meeting a year, and this year will feature Scott Guthrie and Stefan Schackow digging deep into the latest technology being released by Microsoft, including Silverlight. It will be held on Wednesday, June 27th from 8am to 4:30pm at Symphony Hall in downtown Phoenix. It's a free event open to the public, and you can sign up here: http://azgroups.com/uber07 Attending Uber '07 will be time well spent...

It's a great keynote going on this morning out here at the Venetian, learning about the newest of the new from Microsoft. The new beta bits for Silverlight 1.0 are now available for download, with the RTM is coming this summer. And surronding Silverlight is also the announcement of the featureset to be included in Silverlight 1.1. For that Laurent already mentioned some of the great news. Especially important is that a scaled-down version of .NET will be included in that v1.1 release. We've been...

Did you know that there's no grid-like control in WPF 1.0? This post will show you how to get around that limitation. But first, may I say that the recently-released Orcas September CTP bits offers a great improvement at design-time when writing WPF applications. Instead of those three clunky tabs for .xaml, [Designer], and .xaml.cs that we had back in the June CTP, you now get the first glimpse of Microsoft's new cool “Split” view, which will become a part of ASP.NET in the Orcas timeframe! Very...

Although it's already been out for two weeks, it's only just now that I've had time to play with the latest July CTP drop of WPF. And I find it to be faster than June CTP, and in many cases it doesn't have to refresh the entire window when redrawing. I love it! Good job, team Avalon. Hopefully RTM will be soon. One annoying thing: if you want Visual Studio support from Orcas then you have to have previously installed the June CTP, then Orcas, and finally upgrade the .NET Framework to the July bits....

Windows Presentation Foundation is set to revolutionize both web-based and standalone application development. It uses a declarative markup language called XAML to place controls, which looks very similar to HTML. If you're new to XAML or would like to follow along with these examples, you may want to check out a previous tutorial I blogged about WPF, "Start experimenting with XAML on your XP machine in under 15 minutes". In this post we'll see how WPF uses the System.Windows.Controls.Grid control...

I presented a session on WPF at the Arizona .NET User's Group last night, and today have been getting email and calls from several people who wished they could have been in attendance, and wanted to get started with WPF. So for those that weren't there last night, this post is designed as an intro to get you started. The version of Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) included in the June CTP is very polished. Being this late in the development cycle, the things you learn now in this environment...
