I've been experimenting with the Server Core version of Windows Server 2008 for a project I'm working on. You may be aware that Win2K8 ships with this great new streamlined "Server Core" mode that you can select during setup. Installation is lightining-fast, just 10 minutes on my Core 2 Duo machine. A plea out to all those who are using ASP.NET AJAX with sites on IIS7, either under Vista or Longhorn Server: I've been battling a strange issue with ASP.NET AJAX on IIS 7 running under Vista. It's a site that was upgraded from RC1 to RTM, and works great under IIS 6. Ever had the annoying problem of IIS not wanting to start, coughing up the message "Unexpected Error 0x8ffe2740 Occurred."? The reason is that some other application has grabbed port 80. The most common applications doing this are Skype or Trillion. You can try just ending task on them and see if IIS will then start. If you're not running either of those then what could it be?
