VS2005

Visual Studio 2005, which was code-named Whidbey during development. This development environment is an excellent upgrade from the Visual Studio 2003 release, offering WebParts, master pages, a plethora of new controls, edit and continue during debug, and much more.

I had an error that was been driving me up the wall, CS0234: The type or namespace name 'Pkcs' does not exist in the namespace 'System.Security.Cryptograp... This always happened while developing a web application in Visual Studio 2005 and wanting to use code that deals with certificates. During development Intellisense would find the System.Security.Cryptograph... namespace just fine. But it couldn't be found at runtime. I had registered the System.Security assembly, and the project always built...

A plea out to all those who are using ASP.NET AJAX with sites on IIS7, either under Vista or Longhorn Server: I've been battling a strange issue with ASP.NET AJAX on IIS 7 running under Vista. It's a site that was upgraded from RC1 to RTM, and works great under IIS 6. Have troubleshot it enough under IIS 7 to determine that if the AppPool has the Managed Pipeline Mode set to "Integrated", it fails, and if it's set to "Classic", it works perfectly. The error I'm getting is one that was common during...

Go out and get it while it's hot! http://connect.microsoft.co... Available in both English and Japanese. 372 megs for the version that addresses all non-express versions of Visual Studio. 17-23 megs for the Express versions. Lots of bugfixes and upgrades for better perf. Muchly appreciated. By the way, this is 100% updates to the IDE, no changes whatsoever to the .NET Framework 2.0. More info available from Soma Somasegar's blog post: http://blogs.msdn.com/somas...

Did you know that there's no grid-like control in WPF 1.0? This post will show you how to get around that limitation. But first, may I say that the recently-released Orcas September CTP bits offers a great improvement at design-time when writing WPF applications. Instead of those three clunky tabs for .xaml, [Designer], and .xaml.cs that we had back in the June CTP, you now get the first glimpse of Microsoft's new cool “Split” view, which will become a part of ASP.NET in the Orcas timeframe! Very...

Dreamweaver has always offered a compelling environment to develop HTML-centric web pages, with some server-side tricks thrown in for good measure. Historically Visual Studio has offered the opposite, great server-side but a bit light on the client-side code. Visual Studio 2005 brought many enhancements that close the gap. A month ago a friend and I finished a project and submitted it to Microsoft that compares the experience between those two. So if you ever wanted to see how things are done in...

Here's an interesting place, part jail, part armory, where the Crown Jewels are currently displayed. The Tower of London: Lots of history behind this place, often involving imprisonment and beheadings. In happier news, as promised here's the ASP.NET TreeView sample, which is written in VB.NET in VS2005: Jonathan_Treeview.zip It demonstrates the new TreeView control in ASP.NET 2.0, how recursive routines work, and how to extend the standard TreeNode class to support enhanced functionality. ...

Where I work there's a firewall application required in some parts of the network that doesn't play nicely with XP SP2. So we're still on SP1 while the vendor sorts out the problem. Meanwhile I still need to get work done, and I would much rathar be doing that work on Whidbey than Everett! When trying to install Whidbey, it halts with a notice that SP2 is required to continue the installation. So I discovered a hack to get the application installed on XP when SP2 isn't onboard. Obviously this is...
