Bill has certainly placed lots of trust in Ray leading up to today's announcement, and over the next two years the transition will take place so that Bill can become the Bono of the computer industry--taking on the admirable task of battling diseases in third world countries. As one who has questioned Bill's level of generosity in the past, I welcome his contribution to the countries that can so desperately use the assistance.
So what are we in for with Ray at the helm of architecture? Lots more happening in the online space, that's for sure! A couple weeks ago at Wall Street Journal's “All Things Digital“ conference Bill admitted the company is definitely the runner-up to Google in the realm of search technology. I expect Ray will focus major amounts of effort to close that gap.
It's great to be a developer in this day and age when the web is exploding with new potential as a rich development platform!
