Fixing the "Microsoft Bus Driver" error message when installing a RealTek sound card

In my last post I talked about a great little UMPC I bought while on vacation in Japan, Sony's VGN-UX50.  Once back in the states and having caught up with work again I installed XP Pro English with SP2 in a new folder, keeping the ability to dual boot back to Japanese XP Home.  I was pleasantly surprised to find most of the drivers available right there on the hard drive.  But when installing the driver for the sound card, I got the message “Microsoft Bus Driver should be loaded in your system before installing Realtek HD Audio Driver".  This unit uses the RealTek High Definition audio chipset, and when searching on the 'net there's lots of folks with newer motherboards and RealTek audio that are having the same issue.  Q835221 gives the resolution: a QFE download (Quick Fix Escalation).  But that is only officially available by talking to Microsoft tech support.  Fortunately it can also be found bundled along with other driver downloads!  I pulled this copy out of an Intel audio driver:

KB835221.exe (QFE to fix the "Microsoft Bus" error message)

Some folks have reported mixed results after installation, so use at your own risk.  But it solved my problem 100% with no side effects.  The KB article makes it sound like it's an issue limited to XP SP1 and older, or Win2K3 RTM.  But the required UAA drivers are not included with XP SP2 or Win2K3 SP1, so it is a useful QFE to have around if you want to use newer sound cards.  One guy mentioned that even Vista Beta 2 requires it for his RealTek sound card.

UPDATE: John from the fair city of Edinburgh, Scotland had commented below that Q835221 didn't help.  For most folks with RealTek issues it works great.  But if that doesn't help then you can also try the updated driver from Q888111, which has four versions depending on your OS and SP level.

Download Q888111 for:

For those still plagued with sound issues, I hope that this updated driver helps.  On my little Sony laptop this updated driver doesn't work at all, and only the older Q835221 driver listed above was useful.

UPDATE 2: For those with Windows XP 64-bit edition or Windows Server 2003, "Tep" from Japan had written in and mentioned Q901105 which offers an updated version of the hdaudbus.sys driver.  As a side-note, this is certanly a popular topic, getting 90,000 hits since I had first posted it.  Thanks go out to those who have written in to help us know what works and what doesn't.

“Microsoft Bus Driver should be loaded in your system before installing Realtek HD Audio Driver". I recieved the same error when installing the Realtek High definition 1.39 drivers. I was hopeful when I foud this link. The fix however has not worked. 6/21/2006 9:33 PM | John

# Perhaps Q835221 doesn't work with RealTek v1.39...

The RealTek drivers for my sound card were version 1.34, and Q835221 was definitely the fix. Maybe with v1.39 you need the newer UAA driver. I have just updated the post to also include links to the newer QFE files. Hope it helps. 6/22/2006 11:35 AM | Lorin

Help! Where do I find the SM Bus Controller driver? I am lost without my sound card... any help much appreciated. thanks 6/30/2006 3:35 PM | Rich

# Fixing the "SM Bus Controller Driver" error message

MKiller,

The SM Bus controller is Intel's 'System Management Bus controller' that comes as part of the chipset on your motherboard.

To fix this you need to install the Intel INF update utility, also called the Chipset Software Installation utility. You can get the latest version from Intel here:

# re: Fixing the "Microsoft Bus Driver" error message when installing a RealTek sound card

I was suffering from the same problems on an Abit AW8-MAX (Intel 955x chipset + Realtek ALC822M).

Installing the provided Abit drivers (Realtek HD Audio v125) didn't generate the error, but the audio device still wasn't seen.

I tried the latest Realtek HD Audio drivers (v141) and that's when I started seeing this error.

Q888111 (looks like all versions mentioned at the top) is included in the Realtek HD Audio packages and is installed as part of the Realtek setup. I had tried to install it and the downloaded version manually which both seemed to finish without errors, but there was still something missing. I kept getting the error.

Bottom Line, after Q888111 installed I still needed to go into Device Manager, System Devices (at the bottom of the list) and look for the device with the yellow warning on it (Note - It wasn't the same icon as the Yellow ? for other unknown devices and it's important to look for it under System Devices). Find it, right click on it, and select "Update Driver".

I pointed it to the WDM folder where I had extracted the Realtek drivers and only at that time did it finally recognize the Microsoft UAA driver and allow the Sound Device to be installed correctly.

Hope this helps. It was certainly driving me nuts.

I found the zip version of the Realtek HD Audio driver here:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlhd-2.aspx?lineid=2004052&famid=2004052&series=2004061&Software=True

Ciao!

Opps... that should have read ALC882M not ALC822M for the Realtek chip.

Regardless, looks like the driver version is for all Realtek HD Audio chips.

# re: Fixing the "Microsoft Bus Driver" error message when installing a RealTek sound card

Here you go people..

before downloading any of the alternative driver bundles attempt this.. it worked for me while everything else (including the bundles above) did not.

1. Download the proper Audio Drivers from your motherboard manufacture's website. Make sure you select the correct driver for the correct motherboard & operating system. Save and unzip the files to a folder which you will remember.

2. Reboot, while the computer is booting press F2 to enter your BIOS. Find and enter your CHIPSET options. You should see ONBOARD AUDIO HD [AUTO]. Change this to [ENABLED]. Use the ESC button to get back to the main menu, SAVE AND EXIT.
[Use the controls listed in the BIOS menu to navigate BIOS (ie. R/L arrow keys, U/D arrow keys, +, -, ENTER, ESC]

3. Your computer will reboot again and windows should find a new device automaticly. You are now installing "Microsoft UUA / Bus driver". Choose to locate the files yourself. Use BROWSE to select the folder where your audio driver is, you may have to select a sub-folder (ie. "/WDM" for Realtek). Press OK.
[tip: You will not be able to press OK until the correct folder is selected]

You will have to do this one more time for the audio driver itself - should be automatic in Windows.

This worked for my Realtek version 1.44 driver on my ASRock AM2NF4G-SATA2 motherboard. I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 8/23/2006 8:18 PM | Matthew

# SOLUTION!

Hi, ok, I DIDN'T need to download ANY patches, or anything. I have MSI with Realtek, it installed audio fine, but 2nd install on new HDD, and I got error.
To FIX, Thx to previous post here, all I need to do was goto start/control panel/performance and maintenance/system/hardware tab/device manager tab/ then look down at 'system devices' press '+' if closed, if epanded allready, goto a PCI with a yellow '?' question mark on it. then just click it and get it xp to install it propely for you.
Worded for me very quick, and simple. 9/5/2006 9:08 AM | JD

Also if I look Realtek High Definition Audio at Device Manager the general sheet says that "This device is working properly". At the properties sheet if I click on the Audio Devices it says that "Driver is enabled but not functioning properly". If i click on the settings button on the Audio Device sheet it says that "Cannot load the Realtek High Definition Audio Driver. The driver file may be missing. Try installing the driver again". Re-installing the Realtek High Definition Driver does not help.

# re: Fixing the "Microsoft Bus Driver" error message when installing a RealTek sound card

I don't encounter any errors during installation, but I don't have sound and the software doesn't react when I insert or remove the jack of my headphones. I have the following configuration:

1. Gigabyte GA-M55plus-S3G with
2. Realtek ALC883 chip
3. Windows XP SP 2 Home edition

The original driver from mobo installation disc is incompatible with Windows XP, so I did the following:

1. downloaded the Realtek drivers (zip file) from
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
2. run the kb888111xpsp2.exe from \MSHDQFE\Win2K_XP\us
3. reboot
4. passed the \WDM folder to find the drivers to the new PCI device
5. reboot

and it doesn't work. I disconnected the front audio panel from the motherboard to make the situation simplier. Is it possible that the hardware is broken?

Any help would be very appreciated. 12/25/2006 4:05 AM | Cloud

# re: Fixing the "Microsoft Bus Driver" error message when installing a RealTek sound card

Got a Gateway GT4016 for Christmas from Tigerdirect.com. It's refurbished and I spent over 6 hours on the phone with tech support trying to resolve this issue. At one point I spoke with Microsoft Customer Service and they were useless. The Gateway tech support guy had me delete all of my audio system files in SafeMode and now I don't have any sound device recognizable. I continue trying to download the RealTek drivers for my high definition audio card to be recognized, but nothing... "Microsoft bus driver should be loaded..." Gateway is shipping me "recovery" discs to repair the damage, but I can't figure for the life of me why I can't resolve this from downloads off the net. It seems too easy, yet now 10.5 hours later, I am about to declare my defeat. I'm thinking about shipping this sucker back to TigerDirect.com. Can anyone give me guidance? 12/25/2006 9:26 PM | J Martin

Signal64! Thanks Bro! After a few hours of fiddling with this issue (install every KB patch and drivers) I could not get this to work. I tried uninstalling the driver but didn't work. Your fix worked for me like a charm! WTG! 1/17/2007 4:08 PM | Flash01

# re: Fixing the "Microsoft Bus Driver" error message when installing a RealTek sound card

I didn't actually get this as an error message. I got it as an unknown PCI device in my device manager. I'm running a modified compaq SR1710nx with XP pro 32 bit, sp2. For searchability purposes, the important portion of the device description in the dev manager read as follows:

PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_437B

I talked with both compaq and ati support to try and find the driver for this "PCI Device". Nothing worked for months until I found the KB835221.exe file on this site. As soon as it was done updating, I deleted the device and re-probed, and it found it without errors. Thanks so much for hosting the file and the tech knowledge. I hope my update is found by others, and solves their problems as well.

# re: Fixing the "Microsoft Bus Driver" error message when installing a RealTek sound card

I suggest downloading the newest drivers from realtek for all Realtek based integrated audio, if the included KB hotfix does not work, try the older one at the top of this page.

Those having problems with windows not seeing your hardware, after a seemingly errorless install here's an explanation...

9/10 times this is due to the onboard audio being disabled in your system's BIOS. Set onboard audio to ENABLED (sometimes ENABLED is not an option, in which case set to AUTO) The reason you got no erros on install is that you've simply given windows the drivers that it needs to talk to the realtek sound card, not necessarily actually set windows to use the drivers.

I've seen this happen to seasoned technicians and novices alike, so check your bios settings. this thread is for MICROSOFT BUS errors. 3/7/2007 4:00 PM | George Halley

KB835221.exe worked for me!
i have an asus f3jp notebook which came with a vista install dvd and had sound etc.
i removed vista (what a piece of crap) to create a multi-boot (xp, linux and maybe vista for future use). installed xp from scratch and then went to the asus site to download and install the latest drivers. had the same bus error message when trying to install the realtek audio drivers, and no sound. found this page and problem solved. thanks! 3/11/2007 7:18 AM | daniel

Hi,

Recently, i just bought a motherboard Intel DP965LTCK, with integrated Sigmatel HD. I have tried the 888111 and 835221 patches. But i still failed to install the sigmatel codec driver. It always gave error "Device object not present, please restart and run setup again." This is very irritating. By the way, i'm using WinXP Pro SP2 (Eng).

Anyone care to help me please please...

Thanks in advance.
