Welcome to my blog.
Here's what we've got on the menu today:

Lorin Thwaits A geek says what?

Interested in Microsoft's curious Origami Project?  Reminiscent of OQO and Sony U750P, as seen in this video Origami is an ultraportable PC.  (Props to Scott Cate for the link.)  Here's a smattering of images grabbed from the 4 minute video:

It will have high-speed wireless Internet capability based not only on standard WiFi, but so that you don't have to hunt down hotspots also an optional cellular-based technology called EVDO.  This makes it usable on the highways and byways just about anywhere in North America, with both Sprint and Verizon offering this service.

After learning about the first-generation device I had a thought about an enhancement that future revisions could employ: what if the name "origami" was coined to imply that the thing will eventually fold not just once as a clamshell, but another time so it's that much smaller?  I mean, the image at the left is the first generation device...

...but what if future revisions are set to hinge down the middle like this to go pocket-sized:

Lame image editing on my part, but still can you imagine the potential?  Maybe with the ultra-flexible OLED screens soon coming out it will even bend and fold any way you want it to!

So back to the assorted speculation about the first generation device that will kick things off: some people are saying it will be a wearable PC with 3G Internet connectivity, always on, running XP at around 1 GHz on an Efficeon Transmeta CPU.  I'm all for that since I currently take my laptop everywhere with me, and am nearly always connected to the 'net via EVDO.  Why not just use a PDA, you say?  It just doesn't give me all the computing power I crave.  But with this I can now tote a much smaller machine around and enjoy the same features.

On a totally unrelated note, for those in the Phoenix area, what are you doing on St. Patrick's day?  Nothing planned yet?  Then may I recommend checking out my brother's band at Sugar Daddy's in Scottsdale!  You can take a quick test drive to see if you like their sound:

Hope to see you there!
