#PDC08 keynote (day 1, part 2)

Note: The Wireless network at the keynote failed miserably, so this will be posted with a delay.

Next speaker talks about customer challenges: Stay up to date, lower predictable costs including IT resources, High security and availability. That's why software should be distributed as services "Microsoft Online Services". It is just a beginning, and in the future all of the enterprise software will be optionally distributed as an online service.

List of customers already use this, such as Coca Cola, Autodesk, Energizer, etc...

Shows the way to verify user identity over a federation gateway. The end user doesn't know if the service is local or in the cloud. This service is part of Windows Azure.

Cloud application extensibility: Exchange Web Services, Sharepoint online (including Silverlight controls), Dynamics CRM online. Shows how Word can be extended to create CRM reports over the web service by a button click, and published on the Sharepoint site. Services are all in the cloud, so customer doesn't need to worry about that. Silverlight controls using the CRM online services.

Ray Ozzie summarizes the information shown today. New tier = Web tier. SDK can be downloaded from noon today, and you can register for services. Activation will follow in the next 2 weeks. This is a free preview, but interfaces may change over the course of 2009. Huge impact on MSFT priorities. When released commecrially, straightforward business model. Pricing and model will be competitive.
