Winsock error 10053 used to be usually related to network problems, not software. This is no longer the case thanks to anti-virus software that arguably tries to be smarter than it should be.

10053 is a winsock error with the description "Software caused connection abort."

The error happens when the local network system aborts a connection, which might happen if the remote host didn't acknowledge data even after retries.

If you get this error, first see if you have virus scanning software that may be blocking outgoing tcp/ip packets. If you do, make sure that your application is set as a "trusted" application or turn your scanner off, remove it from your machine, drop the CD on the ground and stomp on it several times (if you choose the latter option, proceed with caution. I take no blame for any consequences).

If AV software is not the problem, here are a few things to try:

  • Ping something on your local network. Do you get a response?
  • Ping the remote host. Does it respond? If not, problem solved. You can try a traceroute to see if the problem is at the target remote host or somewhere in between.
  • Is there a firewall between your appliation and the remote host? If so, and the connection has been open for a long period of time with no data transfer, its possible that the firewall has timed out the connection and closed the sockets.

But I have a very interesting case.
Client and server are located at the same computer. I have no antivirus, no firewall on this computer. And I get this error.
Client and server communicate through .NET remoting and I have encrypting sinks. Without these sinks everything works fine.
If I turn on sinks, handshake goes fine and error appears on first message being sent after handshake

Ihave the same problem that Mohammad Raaffi has. I can not get connected to the web because of a winsock error. Comcast say that the NIC cared need to be reset. Gateway can not fix it because Comcast software is keeping them for resetting it. Firedog say there is nothing wrong with the hard drive. I have gone back and forth with these three companies and have not been able to connect to the web since 7/10/07. I am still calling and paying everyone buy the minute. Need some help. connected to the the web with a Comcast router and modem and still can not connect to the we

I have a similar problem with my pc. Am on Vista Home Premium connecting via dsl and a router.
Safari gives me a message that reads : "unkown error" (kCFErrorDomainWinsock:10053).
While at the same time Firefox says :"The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading."
Interesting thing is that i can connect to a HTTPS page, but not a HTTP. Meaning that I havr to make sure that the 'https:' is always there if I want to read my mails on Gmail.
I've tried everything including switching off firewalls and AVs. Problem won't go away.

I get the same error when I try to log into mIRC a chat client. I have no Firewall on and use netgear as my routeter through I was told by someone that it is the chat client but other people using windows 8 have no problem with mIRC chat client. Any help would be appreciated. I have been using this chat client since 98 and just started having problems with it 2 weeks ago. Thank you in advance.
