Thanks for all the laughs...

I have always been a Don Knotts fan. I grew up watching Andy Griffith with my dad, and have many fond memories of the show. If I'm casually flipping through channels, and happen to come across an old episode, I'll stop and watch it. Then came the movies, like "The Apple Dumpling Gang", or "Mr. Limpet", or "The Shakiest Gun in the West." Knotts was an incredible physical comedian. He was one of the best of a generation that is beginning its final curtain call. Thanks for all the laughs, Don. ...

I'm Taking Back Miller Park

Take Back Miller ParkEach summer, a migration of sorts takes place. Miller Park in Milwaukee becomes "Wrigley North" because of all of the Cubs fans that migrate to the typically readily available seats when the Cubs play the Brewers. There's usually more Cubs fans than Brewers fans. "It's time that we let everyone know that Miller Park is not the second home for any other team," [Brewer's Manager Ned] Yost said. This year, a local radio station, along with several local companies are sponsoring...

Ajax.NET and DataBound Server Controls

Over on the AjaxPro Google Group, a user asked a question about databinding a repeater using Ajax. The response has always been "A repeater (or any other server control) is rendered on the server, and then passed back to the client as HTML." One of the purposes of Ajax is to reduce the amount of bytes being sent back and forth between server and client on non-initial load functions. In this post, the usual answers were given. Loop through the dataset with JavaScript, then display the results. This...

HttpHandler for Image Resizing

Is using an HttpHandler for image resizing the best way to go? If I have a site that gets a ton of hits, will the server be constantly pegged resizing all those images? Anyone have any experience, advice to offer a HttpHandler newbie?

Hierarchical Data Followup

Back in November, I posted about a Hierarchical Data scheme that I was working on for a category tree. The article I mentioned came in handy.Well, I'm working on another project (this time, it's a project for my wife), but wanted the possibility of multiple users defining their own hierarchical tree, but store them all in the same table. This is using the Nested Set model. The table will look like:+-------------+-------... Name | char(255) || lft | int || rgt | int || Owner | char(255) |+-------------+-----------...

24 - Napolean Dynomite

Here's a great little parody of 24 / Napolean Dynomite I just found...Enjoy

#7

My wife and I had dinner with some good friends tonight. They told us that in a few weeks, they are going to be parents again. This will be their 7th kid. They've adopted three already, and will be taking in a fourth. These people have really big hearts, and are really patient.I really respect them

Cache Crazy

I know it's probably not "best design" to go Cache Crazy, and cache everything under the sun. But, for a lot of things it makes sense. For data that changes often, it may not be worth it. It's possible that every time you cache something that changes often, you'll just be hitting the database again to cache the new data. I say, if you've got the memory, go for it. Second comment. It's important to remember all the ways in which you're caching the data. For example, I'm not only caching individual...

Flash Floating Menu with Drop Downs...

So, my flash guy and I were working today on an issue where we needed a "floating" flash menu. The reason it has to be floating is that it has drop downs that will "drop" over content/links, etc. So, We devised a way to change the z-index of the div that contains the flash movie. This was working great, until today, when all of the sudden, flash started barfing and shutting down on us. Not sure what was going on.So, we came up with an ingenious solution. When the flash movie does not have the mouse...

Blogging Goal

When I first started blogging a few months back, I made a goal that I would try and post at least one thing each day. Well, I've been slacking. I know that I don't have a "fan base" or anything like that, but a goal is a goal, right?A few things have happened lately. I've been really busy doing "administrative" stuff at work. Not much development time. A friends father passed away the other day. So, anyway. Hopefully, I'll get better...
