Sunset in Kansas

My Wife took this picture today. We're just a bit south of Newton, Kansas

Is there a type converter for the FontInfo Class?

I'm working on developing a few server controls, and need to have a few "Font" properties in the control. Is there a type converter for the FontInfo class?Anyone know

So, what's the point, Travelocity?

So, I log in to Travelocity tonight to check out the fares between Milwaukee and Wichita, to see if they've come below $300. They did! Travelocity had a fare for $171. Wow! Well, they only offer the fare on two days, and both days are “not avaliable.” So, what's the point of publishing an obviously fake fare? Frustrating

Detecting Design Time in ASP.NET

Here's a good little post about detecting design time in ASP.net.I've been developing a suite of in-house tools lately in the form of custom controls, and outputting html to the designer has been critical. Good Stuff

From the Gmail Page...Kind of corny, but cute at the same time... This holiday season,we hope yule log-in to Gmail. Here's to making our world a little smaller, a little warmer, and to bringing all our friends and family a little closer. Happy Holidays from the Gmail Team...

Little Drummer Boy

When Jars of Clay first came out, I was a fanboy. I liked them. They had a fresh sound, creative lyrics, and a genuine show. I saw them 3 or 4 times from '97 to '99. Then, I lost track of them. I'm not sure I quit caring, but I heard a few songs from Much Afraid, etc, and the songs didn't strike me the way the first album did. (How often is that the case?). So, I quit paying attention to them. This summer, I went to a concert in Waukesha (outside Milwaukee), and Jars was there. They had the core...

Installing VS2005 Fixes the VS2003 HTML Code Breaking...

I've installed VS2005 along side VS2003. Ever since I installed 2005, I have had no re-formatting problems in VS2003.I'm doing as much as I can to try and break it to see if this is correct. More details as events warrant

Flash and XML

I'm not much of a PHP guy. In fact, I avoid it whenever I can. But, my church is hosting their website on a great linux provider, which has provided great service for us for the past few years. The linux server uses ChiliSoft ASP (apparently now owned by Sun... That's interesting), which also is a nifty little implementation of ASP for linux. The only problem is, every six months or so, the ASP service on the linux box hangs. Not a big deal, I just fire off a little e-mail to the help desk, and they...

IE not going crazy...

I've fixed my runaway process problem with IE. It turns out the developer toolbar that I installed was not releasing the iexplore.exe processes when a window was closed. So, I just uninstalled the toolbar, and all is happy

IE going crazy

Ever since I upgraded to Server 2003 SP2, I've been having a problem with IE not shutting down properly. Sure, the window closes, but the process is held open.I just cracked open my Task Manager, and saw about 50 instances of iexplore.exe...Anyone have any idea of why this is happening

MySQL Membership Provider

Here's a great article with a MySQL Membership provider.http://www.codepro... like a charm.

VS2005 - .NET 2.0

In This Post, I said that I would be waiting for .NET 2.0. Well, here I am, installing it. I'm particularly curious to see if the Membership provider will work with MySQL.I've gotta port it over from SQL Server, but that won't be too hard

Best of Visual Studio Launch Event - Milwaukee

So, I just arrived at the "Best of Visual Studio" Launch event in Milwaukee. I fired up my laptop, and was pleasantly surprised to be able to connect to a wireless connection here at the hotel. It's a capacity crowd here. Typically, I hate these types of events. For as much of a people person as I am, I sure am an introvert at things like this.Oh Well

Someone with a little too much time on their hands...

First AJAX.Net Project Deployed

Well, I deployed my first AJAX.NET project today. It's a private (local) project for a client. I like the benefits of AJAX technology, but there are a few quirks that should be dealt with. For instance, session time-outs. If you use any kind of session based authentication system, a time-out may occur if the page is not refreshed within the session time-out limit. Back-Button issues (as some have pointed out) are less of a big deal in this project...

Ajax String Building - Which is better?

Which is better? This: <AjaxMethod()> _Public Function GetString() as String return "The String"End Function<Script> function getTheStringCallback(res) { document.write("<table&g... + res.value + "</td></tr><... }</Script>Or This: <AjaxMethod()> _Public Function GetString() as String Return " The String"End Function<SCRIPT> function getTheStringCallback(res) { document.write(res.value); }</SCRIPT>When writing AJAX...

Madagascar

My wife has family in Canada. They have family in Madagascar.Yesterday, we drove the family from Canada to O'Hare to catch a plane to Madagascar. The snow was not fun.It took us 3 hours to drive from O'Hare back home (which is normally a 45 minute drive). The van from Canada kind of freaked me out. The spedometer is in metric. So I was driving through town keeping up with traffic at about 35 miles per hour, and looked down at the spedometer and saw something like 60. Took a little getting used to.They'll...

YEAH!!!

http://www.themilwaukeechan... Senate has FINALLY voted to repeal the automatic gas tax hike today. Now, it will go to the Assembly, and then probably be vetoed by Gov. Doyle (Big Surprise). If Doyle knew what was good for him, he'd pass this thing. It's a winner. It's not so much that the gas tax increase is big every year, it's the automatic part that gets me. I'm not sure it rises to the level of "Taxation without representation" that some have claimed, but...

Mr. Six - 86ed..

http://business.bostonheral... frustrates me. The Mr. Six ad campaigns generated more excitement for the Six Flags brand than anything in recent history, and the new ownership of SF has nixed it. Check out the discussion over at CoasterBuzz...

Muppets Movie Review

Thanks to help.net...I'm also a huge Muppets fan!The muppets have new movie review site. It's pretty funny. The thing that I'm kind of disappointed about is the fact that the voices aren't the same. I guess that's to be expected, as we get farther away from Henson and Frank Oz. It's nearly impossible to get the voices exactly right, but with Waldorf and Statler, for example, they're not even close.Oh Well...

I Saw The Sky

I saw it. They had the Saturn Sky at Saturn of Gurnee today. My wife and I stopped in to see it.http://www.saturn.com/sa...

The heart of systems...

I think I'm realizing something about systems, especially systems that people use. I'm realizing that what I thought about writing systems was kind of backwards. Instead of getting data into a system being the priority, I'm realizing that getting data out (particular in reporting) is where I should be spending a majority of my time. It's an area that I've typically avoided, only doing the bare minimum of what is necessary. It turns out that reporting and analysis is probably 90% of the game...

IISRESET on remote machine...

Ever wondered how to reset IIS on a remote (local network) machine?Pop open the command prompt, and type:iisreset <machine_name>That's all

Rant on Sears...

My wife and I decided to buy a snowblower last week. I'm not sure why I didn't post about this earlier, but, anyway... We do our homework, and decide on a model from Sears. So, I go to the store to buy it. Nope. Not in stock. They have to order it. 15-17 days till delivery at the store.I understand why they don't keep big stuff like that in stock (to some degree), but in today's e-commerce driven, connected world, 15-17 days till delivery is a little absurd. A week, maybe, but 15-17 days?</rant>...
