It Worked... Instructions for setting up Google Analytics on GWB Blogs...

In my last post, I talked about the possibility of using Google Analytics on a blog.  It's possible, and it works quite well.

Thanks to a tip from Michael, things came together for me.

Here are the steps I took:

  1. Set up an account on Google Analytics.  It's free.
  2. Register your blog as http://www.geekswithblogs.net/XXXXX/default.aspx as the URL.  (Where XXXXX is your blog name).
  3. Plop the JavaScript code that they provide in the Static News/Announcement section of .Text Admin.
  4. Wait a few days (It's slooooowww.), and you're good to go.

Great info. I however cannot get it to accept the site URL in the format you mention in step 2.

geekswithblogs.net/ehammersley/default.aspx gives me Invalid Input. Any guidance?

Hmmm..

Wierd.

I just added your site to my profile by doing this...

1. Add the URL as www.geekswithblogs.net
2. Once it is accepted, go into the settings for the site profile, and fix the URL to point to the proper place.

I've contacted Google about these "issues", and here's their reply...

"If you would like to go ahead and get started with Google Analytics, I
recommend removing the directory path from your URL when specifying the
Website URL for your profile. In addition, IP addresses are currently not
valid inputs either. Once you have created your profile, simply place the
tracking code in the HTML source of your site. The data for your Analytics
reports will be based on where you insert the tracking code rather than
the URL you specify for the profile. Once this issue has been resolved,
you may edit the profile name and URL to include the directory path."

Good Luck,
K-

Ah, that's it. I didn't register it as just www.geekswithblogs.net and try to change it later. Honestly, I didn't know if I chould change it at a later time so I was afraid to try it. Thanks for the guideance.

Mark Tredwell geekswithblogs.net/mtredwell posted something I'd forgot about. We can also get to our blog via an alternate URL <blogname>.geekswithblogs.net This makes Google happy and works perfectly. I'd suggest others try it this way.
