Getting Google Analytics to work with blogs...

I've been playing around with Google Analytics for a few days now, and thought, "I wonder if I can get this to work with my blog."

So, I went on to Google Analytics and tried to add my blog as a site.  However, when I put http://www.geekswithblogs.net/kyle into the URL text field, it gave me an "Invalid Input" error.  I tried appending the forward slash at the end of the URL, and still the same thing.

So, then I noticed the "Default Page" text box, and thought...

Hmmm...  If I put http://www.geekswithblogs.net as the site URL, and /kyle as the default page, will it accept that?

Yes.

OK.  So, then I went in and put the JavaScript code in the static HTML area of the .TEXT admin options page, and the JS is showing up OK on the blog.

So, now I've got to wait for Google to decide to go out and check the site for "valid code" and start gathering data.

I'll post back here tomorrow if this has been successful, or if any changes are needed.

But will the fact that you have done this first mean that nobody else will try to enable analitics on their blog?

Will it report all stats for GWB.net as being stats for your blog?

...inquiring minds want to know.

Here's what I did...

1. Registered GWB.net/flanakin/default.aspx

2. Created a link with the content "</a>...<a>", where "..." represents a trimmed down Analytics code on one line (I removed unnecessary content to save space)

3. After two days, it finally showed up

Just so you all know, their data updates VERY slow. I had to wait 2 days for my sites to eventually show up. When they did, all data was there. To verify that it's working, browse to your site and look for a cookie called "_umt" (I think that's what it's called). As far as whether it'll affect anyone else: no, it won't. It'll only track hits directly to pages that have the code.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask. I love it. Google's outdone themselves, once again!
