Have you ever wondered what is the most popular programming language on the planet? Today this question came across my mind and I quickly found the answer at TIOBE Programming Community Index. This ranking is based on the wold-wide availability of skilled engineers, courses and third party vendors. The ratings are calculated using popular search engines like Google, MSN and Yahoo!.

First thing you will note that during last year Java has finally dethroned the old king - the C language. It's interesting to see that OO languages slowly take place of the previous generation (C, (Visual) Basic and Pascal), but not as fast as one can expect. However, at the same time, there are some new supporters for Fortran, Lisp, and Ada. From the OO world Delphi/Kylix is going down. The script languages like PHP, Python, JavaScript or even Perl all do pretty well.

Of course, the .NET community has it's share too, as both C# and VB.NET have very good positions and are quickly gaining new followers.

Here is another article on the same subject.
