Google Analytics - Quick start to to website logging

Google Analytics website traffic logging

Google Analytics is now free, you can track stats for multiple sites (profiles) from a single Google Analytics account, the sites you wish to log traffic on does not have to be on the same domain as the one you registered your account with.

To log traffic couldn't be simpler, you are given a snippet of javascript to add to the web page that you want to collect statistics from.

See a screenshot below for one of the traffic stats page for my GWB blog.

For quick access to your site's stats you can use Google analytics module to display Google Analytic Stats on your Google Homepage.

I just tried it in the News/Announcements section and that seemed to work. So, I guess I have the answer.

Did you put it in the same place, or is there a better place you would recommend?

yes I've put mine in the News section on the left nav as well since this left navigation bar always appear on all pages on GWB so the javascript to log traffic will always get executed.

Is there a way to add the code into a sharepoint site ? Do I have to add it on each page ?

Thanks

I have read that you can add it to a master page in WSS 3.0, but my shop is still running WSS 2.0. Since I have FrontPage 2003, I can just open the site and do a find and replace on every page of the site for the </body> tag with the Google Analytics code followed by the </body> tag. This placed it on every page in the site, including list and document library views. I did find it necessary to update the Titles of my custom .ASPX pages to make a couple of reports more useful, otherwise it gave the Site Title as the title of every page.

Google Analytics using javascript and many handheld devices are not javascript enabled, althoug most newer handsets are. There are other techniques in gathering stats tho (eg impressions on 1x1 transparent gif) which other providers offer. Would only be a matter of time before Google offers that.

If you are looking for Google Analytics for mobile, we have a solution @ http://www.mobilytics.net.

Google's stats are wrong since the phones do not support javascript.

They also don't offer information about the actual phones and capabilities of the visitors.
