An Archived Managed World This blog has moved to http://www.managed-world.com/blog

Rory posted a wonderful reaction to how some people disliked his .NET Rocks show. Beyond his post, it made me start thinking about my third place again. Actually, it made me start thinking about the lack thereof. I'll say it now, I don't have a third place and it makes me sad. I kind of have a “virtual” third place that is a sort of amalgam of various websites and blogs. But that doesn't satisfy the personal need for a physical third place.

No matter where you live in this world, I would love where all of you have third places.

My local users group is kinda a 3rd place for me, though its more technology focused, I try to make it as 3rd place friendly as I personally can. But other than that, I'm pretty a 2-dimensional nerd.

I have a feeling that once I start attending my local user group that it will be more like a 3rd place. I don't really hang around at Starbucks like some of my close friends do because 1) I don't want to pay for Wi-Fi access and 2) I'm not a coffee drinker.

There's this nice place in the Portland-area called Backspace (http://www.backspace.bz) that I like but it's not ideally located compared to where I work and live.

I think the aftershow party (boozing at a nearby bar) makes for a fine 3rd place.

I've met plenty of people whose company I've really enjoyed by attending some of these "after-school" nerd gatherings.

Otherwise, it's just trading code samples online. That's fine and all, but you *have* to do something else, you know?

Actually, you obviously do know :)
