SQL Intellisense For Free
If you've used Visual Studio, and ever switched to SQL Server (Query Analyzer, for example), you've probably wished for Intellisense. I know I have. Now, Red Gate, makers of the best SQL products (besides the server itself) out there, is offering SQL Prompt for free until September 2006. I've downloaded it, and will be installing it soon, considering I work with SQL stored procedures on a daily basis right now. It adds intellisense to a whole slew of products, including Query Analyzer and Visual ......

All Mix '06 Content Available
Mike Swanson's got the news that all of the sessions from the 72 hour conversation known as Mix '06 is online, and will be for at least 6 months. Time to get the downloaders going. When will Microsoft get on board and start distributing this stuff via torrents?Technorati Tags: Microsoft | Mix06 ......

Interested In Web Content Management 2007?
If so, then this'll be of interest to you. For those not in the know, Web Content Management is the next version of Microsoft Content Management Server, and should bve a solid replacement.Anyway, if you want to get a look at it before it's released, Andrew Connell will be doing a webcast on April 18th, and he'll go into what's new (everything, it seems!) and how to migrate from CMS 2002 (the last major release) to the latest and greatest. If you're interested, check out Andrew's post for some more ......

Mix06 Sessions Coming
Mike Swanson is reporting that about 50 sessions from Mix06 will be available online for free - for everyone. Microsoft did the same thing for PDC '05, so I was hoping this was going to happen. Expect to see it in three to four weeks.I spoke with Brian, who was there, and he told me this was the best conference he's ever been to - and he's been to a few Tech Eds and PDCs. I'm looking forward to downloading a few of these.Technorati Tags: Mix06 ......

Databound Controls in ASP.NET 2.0
As I've posted about previously, I'm working through the process updating our server control for Tourney Logic. Well, we made a pretty big design decision. Since the bracket is much easier to configure, we've decided to add databinding - we only have one main collection now, and it's only one level deep, so it makes perfect sense for us to do that. Before, we had two collections, and one was two levels deep, so while databinding was possible, it wasn't really viable to do so. Having made the decision, ......

Improving Virtual PC Performance

Angus Logan provided me with a great link today about improving Virtual PC performance. I thought I'd seen most of the performance optimizations, but this is much more detailed than I've seen in the past.

I'll definitely be looking at these in the near future.

Parameterized Unit Tests
This is older, but Microsoft has a research paper about Parameterized unit tests. It's an interesting concept. Let's say you have a method that has a few extremes that need to be tested - let's try a simple example of multiplication. You would want to test something multiplied by 0. You'd want to test an overflow situation. Then, you'd want to test multiplying by a single negative number. Then maybe two negative numbers. You get the idea. I listed out 4 tests above, but there could be many more. If ......

Creating My Own Idea
Well, I've been harping on an idea for a while now, and instead of waiting for others to get on board, I decided to see what I could do myself. I started making the code, and to get a quick and dirty version up and running, it was actually pretty simple. Here's the high level logic of my initial run:1. Get an OPML file.2. Load each feed for that OPML file.3. Parse the content of each item in each feed and pull out each URL.4. For each URL, keep track of the domain. If the domain isn't in the list, ......

Web Projects In VS 2005 - Update
Apparently I'm not the only one who's hearing the buzz around the new web projects in Visual Studio 2005. Scott Guthrie is too. And he's on vacation in Mexico!Anyway, he has a great post explaining a few things. Both of the issues I listed earlier (references and excluding files) are handled in post-beta builds, something I wasn't aware of. Here's another example of Microsoft listening to what the developers want.Seriously though, with a guy like Scott running the ASP.NET team, you knew there had ......

Steve Rubel started it. He's posted his list of 10 indispensable blogs - the ones he would take on a desert island with him. Then, he created a Technorati tag so everyone can participate.Side note: adding tags for Technorati is pretty simple! Just add a link to (for examle) http://technorati.com/tag/1... with a rel="tag" in the link. Nice!Ok. Back on topic. My ten blogs I can't live without. That's tough, but here's my list. If I read your blog and don't list you, please don't be offended. Getting ......

Aggregating By URLs
Mike Torres has an interesting post that's mainly about cross-posting, but he mentions something about being able to flag all posts that link to a particular URL as something you're not interested in. That got me thinking. Wouldn't it be cool if your aggregator could look at all of your posts and have the ability to group them by URLs they link to. Then you could quickly sort them by link count, and you'd get a good feel for what is hot. For example, over the past few days, if I were to do that, ......

Microsoft's Atlas
News.com had the story Monday night, and by 11:30 Tuesday morning, Scott Guthrie had a great article describing in much more detail what they're building.I've been a little down on AJAX, but I'm starting to come around. One of the downsides I posted about AJAX was cross browser support, but I also said a framework development company, such as Microsoft, could alleviate that problem. The other reasons still stand - back and forward buttons, bookmarks, etc., but those are mostly related to how you use ......

Global Bank Integration From the Patterns And Practices Team
I saw a demo of this at Tech Ed, but now I found it on MSDN. The Patterns and Practices team has created a sample that covers how you can use Integration patterns effectively. They did a couple of very cool things with this. First, you can view a flash demo of how it works - that means you can still get all of the benefits of learning the patterns without the pain of installation. The second is how big the real solution is - you can install it across 6 different servers, and it contains 40 projects. ......
