Windows 2003 Firewall and SQL 2000 Named Instances

I was installing a real server to take the load off our single development server currently running two database instances, two web servers, and our build server.

We just got a nice new server and I installed Windows 2003 R2, SQL Server 2000 with two named instances, and Subversion. I wanted to transition the databases off our primary server because the thing is just bogged down. I could not for the life of me get the build server to connect to the new DB server. I knew the problem was the Windows Firewall, but I also didn't want to turn the thing off. It turns out you have to enable Port 1434 UDP to allow discovery of the services.

That only cost me two hours and an argument with my wife for getting home late…
