Today, XML is 7 years old.

Irwin asked what we were doing at this time 7 years ago.  Well I was a Junior at Clinton High School in Clinton, Missouri taking PASCAL and BASIC.  I really hope they upgraded their development classes, maybe I should check.

What were you doing when XML was born?

Beating my head against SGML saying "Nothing good can come of this..." :)

I was a DP2 in the US Navy assigned to the Defense Intelligence Agency. I worked on the help desk supporting customers globally with our IBM Mainframe, Solaris and NT. I was just polishing up the first ever help desk tech support procedures website, and wrapping up requirements collection for the next generation help desk app: Remedy. I remember thinking that the client sucked, and the database was rambling and confusing (though not as bad as SMS 2.0).

Let's see, 7 years ago I was a junior in high school back in Topeka, KS. Unfourtnately I wasn't even taking development classes because my school didn't offer anything I could stand to take in the CS area. I think instead I was trying to find ways to not do any real work so I could work on my pet projects at night and still pass school :-). In my spare time (aka most of the time) I was writing VB6 code that I sold via the Internet and trying to learn everything I could about Windows development.

Back then I didn't even know what SGML was, or that it would be the parent of something that would change so much (for better or worse).

sheesh, waiting on the result of my interview at KU med school and programming in VB 5.0/6.0 beta for Heartspring in Wichita, KS.

Since I don't sign my name "M.D." we know how the interview went. :) Strangely enough I started using XML as a data source for databound HTML elements around that time I think. Anyone remember those? http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/author/databind/datasources.asp

hmmm... 7 years ago I was working for DoD as a civilian, doing VB5 and classic ASP development. Life has definitely improved since then. Incidentally, I was a junior in High School 18 years ago, wow...
