Red-Gate is sending a DBA to Space!
Ok, I think this is the coolest contest I have seen. Red-Gate is sending a DBA to Space! If you have mad SQL skills, you should definitely look into this contest. More Information: Red Gate, a U.K.-based software company, has launched a campaign that will reward a database administrator (DBA) with the ultimate getaway: a seat on a commercial flight into space, courtesy of Space Adventures, Ltd But first, DBAs must unravel a Gordian knot of a plot involving morphing Martians, pets in peril, alien ......

C# 4.0 How-To by Ben Watson – Sams Publishing | Book Review
The wonderful people of Sams Publishing were kind enough to send me a few books to review recently, and one of them was C# 4.0 How-To by Ben Watson. There were a couple things about this book that really compelled me. The format (this is a first How-To book by Sams for me so I assume it goes across the board) was very much like a focused blog. It was broken up into small posts about each topic. The other thing that compelled me was the amount of code samples. This is not a book that you can sit down ......

Joy! | Important Information About Your iPad 3G
Looks like I was one of the lucky 114,000 who AT&T lost their email to “hackers”. Why is “hackers” in “double quotes”. I can just imagine some executive at AT&T in their “Oh No, We Messed Up Meeting” saying, what happened? Then someone replied, well we have had a breach and “hackers” broke in (using the quote in the air gesture) and stole our iPad 3G customers emails. Oh well, I am sure my email has been sold and sold again by many different vendors, why not AT&T now. At least Dorothy ......

Learning Objective-C for iPad/iPhone/iPod Development
I am learning how to write apps for the iPad/iPhone/iPod! Why, well several reasons. One reason, I have 5 devices in my house on the platform. I had an iPad and iPhone, Michelle has an iPhone, and each of the kids have iPod Touches. They are excellent devices for life management, entertainment, and learning. I am amazed at how well the kids pick up on it and how much it effects the way they learn. My two year old knows how to use it better than any other device we own and she is learning new words ......

Blogging: MacJournal & Windows Live Writer
One thing I have learned about using a Mac is that Apple does not produce very many free applications. The ones they do are typically not full featured and to get the full feature you need to buy their upgraded version. For example, when it comes to Photo editing and cataloging, iPhoto is not a solution for large files or RAW processing, you need Aperture which is a couple hundred dollars. I am not complaining because I like it when an application has a product team who generates revenue with it, ......

GWB | We need your input - Death of the "Green Monster"
Tonight, the minds will gather at AJI Software HQ and discuss the death of the "Green Monster". We have found someone we like that might work on the graphics side of the site, but tonight we are mapping out the layouts and features that will be in 3.0, the Wrath of Khan. If you have any pressing thoughts or needs for the Community Portal, please voice them here or forever hold your peace. Also, congrats to Chris Williams on 900 posts. We Are Microsoft | Road Trip Home
Sorry for the loud recording, but I was trying to be busy with driving while recording. Using a Bluetooth connection to my cell, we connected to the EV-slow-O network and downloaded the episodes Jerod was publishing in KC to write the post announcing them. I really have to get some software written for podcasting again to make it easier (and get a feed going). Have Fun Technorati Tags: Road Trip,We Are Microsoft ......

We Are Microsoft | We Are Microsoft Staff
This was a really fun interview, because we had the chance to talk to Toi Wright and Amber Weiss, the two people who coordinated the event, and who we worked with closely during the event. Toi coordinated this event by contacting charities in the Dallas area, gathering their requirements and defining a selection process. She was looking for charities who were in need of a software solution, but something that could be completed over the course of a weekend. She also sent out the call to local developers ......

My Roadmap to Becoming a Better Developer | Tagged by: Dru Sellers
Dru Sellers recently tagged me on what I would do to become a better developer so here it goes: Get on SubText 1.9.5 - Running a growing software consulting firm is hard. Even with John at the helm with me, it takes a lot of time. This is one of the first acts I need to become a better developer due to the fact that is will require a high level of involvement with reviewing the code changes and merging the differences. Plus there will be an additional need to really get the most ......

See what Microsoft is Surfacing
The Zune and XBox 360 are amazing pieces of hardware and software working together to make an amazing media experience. Recently, I introduced Microsoft IPTV technology into my home and have loved every minute of that experience as well. But now, Microsoft announces the next level of media experience with Surface (every blogger will mention it today). It is definitely the most amazing machine and technology I have ever seen for the home and entertaining industries. I have already been passing my ......

Posted On Wednesday, May 30, 2007 8:14 AM - SOFTWARE UPGRADE FRIDAY NIGHT 7PM (CST)
Take a good last look at on .Text because tomorrow night, we are doing a major upgrade to SubText 1.9.4. This upgrade will most likely take 4 to 5 hours to ensure the software is converted and stable. I really want to thank Dru and the SubText team for all their work with us during this process. After quite a bit of testing, we have very high confidence in this product and the migration should be seamless. ** IMPORTANT ** If you find any issues with the site after the upgrade, ......

Posted On Friday, October 13, 2006 9:52 PM Turns Three This Weekend! Happy Birthday!
Wow, it is hard to believe it has been three years as a real community. Sunday marks the three year anniversary of the site as a community, not just my blog. I had written a blog engine that worked for my own, but after a few months of trying to build the admin tooling, I contacted Scott and got this site working with .Text. Hard to believe it is still running the same engine, with a few tweaks. That said, we really need to move into the future. We have started designing the strategy of GWB 2.0, ......

Father and Daughter join the contest with "The Bloodletting"
Scott Miller, one of our GWB bloggers since August of 2005, has joined the competition with the graphics help of his daughter. This is definitely one of the coolest events of this contest because I really think for us software developers, designing code with our kids involved let them know more about what we do and how the process works. My son is only 15 months so I have not been able to put my theory into practice, but John and his son Nathaniel write software together and he seems to love it! ......

.NET PDF Utility - Siberix Report Writer & Siberix PDF Library
During a current project, I needed a tool for generating PDF documents for reporting on pre-printed forms. The majority of reports in the system use this form. I wanted to find a solution that fit my needs and nothing more. Other systems do so much and very well, but for just developer needs, they are a bit much. I found a utility call Siberix PDF Library and it's counterpart Siberix Report Writer. If you need a tool for PDF generation, I highly suggest these products. At the current time, the price ......

PT Cruiser from Avis
I know your pain Tim, last week I had the same misfortune in Seattle with Avis and was driving this monstrosity around. Mine was sparkle flake blue. On last week's trip to the Colorado Software Summit I had the misfortune, for the second time in the last year, to receive a PT Cruiser from Avis. This automobile is a misbegotten failure, despite its admirably idiosyncratic shape and ample headroom. Its ride is unstable and jittery on high-speed turns, its cargo space absurdly limited. Worst of all, ......

What the hell is wrong with our galleries punk?
Alright, no one said that, but they should be. You might have noticed the flaky galleries after the move to servers. It is caused by redundant servers without redundant uploads. So in other words, you unload an image and only one of our servers has it. I hope we can find a solutions soon, but if you know of some good file replication software or how to use the existing stuff with W2K3, please contact me.

Samsung i600 Upgrade
If your like me and frustrated with your Samsung Smartphone because you spend way to much money to have 2002 software loaded and no access to write .NET apps for it (the original purpose of purchasing the phone), then keep your eye on site. They say it will be available (for an extra $15) tomorrow, but they have said this for quite some time and moved it back each week. However, this is the first time I have seen a link so I thought I would share. UPDATE: The download ......
