One Week on New Servers and Everything is Great
It has been a week since we moved our System to a new set of load balanced servers and everything has been going great. I am so amazed at the performance of the new hardware. On average, we only use less than 5% of the CPU at any given moments or the database and web servers. I have seen a performance boost in page load as well, but I will have to confirm that with the statistics as they roll in. This is all in preparation for a new community we are launching with some friends ......

Microsoft ASP.NET | IIS Express Announced
Since installing Option Pack 4 for Windows NT to get IIS running Classic ASP, we have all felt the lack of ease from Microsoft to actually create websites on a developer box. There has always been an expressed need to not need a custom configured machine to install Visual Studio and create web sites right away. Why must we open Windows Configuration and add all these pieces if a solution for our OS could be added to the development product line. My first development job was 10 years ago when I worked ......

GWB | Sorry about the outage this morning
It looks like someone (probably search engine bots) were a little more excited with these servers than they were with the last and made over 10,000 requests in a minute, causing IIS to shut down.  I up-ed the limit and am going to keep an eye on concurrent connections for awhile.  If you see any issues with GWB, please @jjulian message me on Twitter or email me at jjulian AT  Thanks!!!!

Back From Maine – GWB IIS Migration
Maine was great! This passed weekend and beginning of the week, my wife and I took our first vacation without the kiddos since our honeymoon in celebration of our 5 year anniversary. At first we were looking for places like New York or Chicago to go, but I wanted to get away from hectic life and visiting large cities is just a hectic as real life in KC. So we decided to go to Maine on a whim. Since it was so unlike us (mainly me) to not do trips like this, we went one step further and only planned ......

GWB | Is that the smell of new servers?
Over the next month we will be migrating the Geekswithblogs system over to new hardware with a platform upgrade to Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008. This upgrade will force us to make some changes that are needed to the database and others that are just because (like ASP.NET 2.0 to ASP.NET 3.5). What does this mean if you are a blogger? Hopefully nothing. The idea is to migrate the data/code to the new servers with dummy IPs and then when we are ready, swap the IPs with the new boxes and BAM, ......

Posted On Thursday, April 30, 2009 3:01 PM 3.0 is now available!
Wow, that took a long time but it is finally ready. This morning I released the 3.0 will all the new features we could finish before PDC 2008. This is definitely not the end of 3.0 features, but it needed to get out the door. The first change you will notice is the GREEN MONSTER has been replaced. This theme has been in the works since the springtime as most of you with shirts know. Keep an eye on this blog and the tutorials section of the site throughout this week so you can learn ......

GWB | Why must you act up while I am away?!?
"A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The specified network name is no longer available.) " This is what has been causing issues with the site this weekend. Thankfully the hospital has good WiFi and my cell's bluetooth connection to the HSDPA network from AT&T makes being able to debug the servers ok. However, we will be in the hospital the rest of the day and going home tomorrow so ......

The IT Side | Oh Happy Day!!!
Look what I get to prepare this week! I am so excited. We are building some new internal environments and decided to spring for some new servers. Aren't they pretty. I can't wait to smell the Quad-Core 2.0ghz Xeons cooking with 8GB of RAM each machine. I will post more about what we are doing and hopefully some more pictures, wish me luck! GWB | Servers Are Online Again
When is Microsoft going to fix the loneliness bug in Windows Server? If you haven't heard of this bug, it is when you leave town on vacation and your server gets lonely and starts acting up. Then in uncontrollable emotion the server goes crazy the first minute you log into it. Anyway, the servers should be back up again and sorry for any issues that it may have caused. GWB | Custom Domains Have Been Released!
I feel like Mater from Cars yelling, "It's done!" The first time I attempted this task, I was completely unsuccessful and undid all the code changes I made. I gave it a few weeks and tried again using a different approach, this time it was successful! Adding additional logic for host records to SubText is not an easy feat. Not only do you have to worry about the virtualization aspects of the site and ensureing the domains requested will still load the data, but with many open-source projects, everyone ......

Murray Gordon Interview from South Carolina Code Camp
Sorry for the delay, with the servers moving and writing a book, I have been swamped with work. I will get these out again, along with the recordings from HDC as soon as possible. Murray Gordon, member, recorded this show with us talking about his presentation and what he does on a daily basis. This is a great interview if you are working with legacy systems and using .NET as the client. Listen Now ......

Site Will Be Down Tomorrow Evening - 8PM CST
I will be taking the site down tomorrow at 8PM CST for most likely 4 hours to transfer files from one farm of servers to another. The majority of the leg work has been done, now we just have to move files. The new servers are loud, and fast....raaaaaaaaaaaaa.....but they don't sound good because they are free, because that they are not. (Capital One Commercial Reference) It is very cool to see 4 graphs on the web servers for processors, makes me drool. SITE DOWN THURSDAY OCTOBER 12, 2006 - 8PM-12AM ......

We have purchased the new equipment for
The new servers will be hosted at FullControl Networks here in Kansas City. Currently they are being setup by their staff and should be available for me to configure soon. Yesterday I visited their facility here in KC and I must say I am very impressed. They have everything you would want in a hosting company and they are local for us. Something comforting about knowing your sites are hosted just a few miles from where you are. If you are in the market for dedicated hosting, I would highly suggest ......

Geekswithblogs is moving hosting companies
DiscountASP.NET has been amazing to us. The hosting is excellent and we can't be happier with their service. That said, our site has outgrown what they have offered us as the original solution. Since they do not provide dedicated services, we will be moving the site to another hosting firm that does. This means more power and more control for us. I haven't finalized the server configuration and purchase yet, but it should happen within the next 48-60 hours. We will then announce a date and time the ......

Sorry for the outage
Looks like we had some outages last night due to traffic, we are looking at the logs to determine if this is a one off or if we need to start throwing servers are the site.

.NET PDF Utility - Siberix Report Writer & Siberix PDF Library
During a current project, I needed a tool for generating PDF documents for reporting on pre-printed forms. The majority of reports in the system use this form. I wanted to find a solution that fit my needs and nothing more. Other systems do so much and very well, but for just developer needs, they are a bit much. I found a utility call Siberix PDF Library and it's counterpart Siberix Report Writer. If you need a tool for PDF generation, I highly suggest these products. At the current time, the price ......

What the hell is wrong with our galleries punk?
Alright, no one said that, but they should be. You might have noticed the flaky galleries after the move to servers. It is caused by redundant servers without redundant uploads. So in other words, you unload an image and only one of our servers has it. I hope we can find a solutions soon, but if you know of some good file replication software or how to use the existing stuff with W2K3, please contact me.

Technical Difficulties

We seem to be having some issues today with the redundant servers and this site. It will be fixed real soon, but I wanted to announce this before Colin does.

Update:  We should be GO again, moves us back to DEFCON 4.
