My Office @ AJI Software Headquarters
One of the great things about 2012 is that I am not in our office nearly 100% of the time during business hours. This is the first time I have been able to work from our office this much in about 4 years. In fact, we have moved three times during that four years and I have only averaged about 10-25% of my time in the office. This means I can actually setup my desk for development instead of business related tasks only. That means THREE MONITORS! My first reaction after a week with this setup: I never ......

BUILD Keynote Notes | From Virtual Link
Demostration of Windows 8 Lots of great stuff going on with Windows 7 installs Touch First, Mouse Second – Wow, that is going to be interesting Demo of a netbook from two years ago running Windows 8 using only 380mb of RAM, nice. Steven even said it was his daily use machine for a year, Microsoft needs to buy him a nicer machine. Windows 8 Start still feels like Windows Mobile and Windows Media Center had a child We decided every time they said “SUPER”, we are drinking They are very nervous and the ......

Summer 2011 | Home Office Update Again
As I do almost every year, I rearranged my home office. This time I moved my desk against the wall and added a shelve to support my main monitors. This allows me to work from my two macs when I am at home, and RDP into my Windows development laptop (below the monitors). I mainly use the macs for graphics work and photography now. The MacBook Air is still goes with me each day and sometimes I bring the iPad as well. Without better pen support, the iPad is just my couch app device or car device for ......

GWB | My Desk at Home
The GWB Staff of Geeks blog recently posted a request to see your desk, so it would only be fair if I should my workspace as well. This is my desk at home. Since my full time job is a consultant, I need a good place to work when clients allow me to work remotely. The GWB HQ is about 45 minutes from my house so I tend to do most of my work at home. Here is a photo of where I work. WARNING: Lots of partially eaten fruit products on my desk. From the left: MacBook Pro 15in with 27in monitor attached ......

GWB | Long time no see Jeff
Hello again! This is my first time to blog since July and that is a little bit long I know. So what has been going on? Well quite a bit actually. First, Addison and Brandon are getting quite a bit older and are more active. I truly enjoy spending time with them in the evenings and that takes a lot of time out of blogging. Second, my role as youth leader at my church has been taking a larger priority in my life than when we first started our youth ministry. We are now up to 40 students at our Saturday ......

Back From Maine – GWB IIS Migration
Maine was great! This passed weekend and beginning of the week, my wife and I took our first vacation without the kiddos since our honeymoon in celebration of our 5 year anniversary. At first we were looking for places like New York or Chicago to go, but I wanted to get away from hectic life and visiting large cities is just a hectic as real life in KC. So we decided to go to Maine on a whim. Since it was so unlike us (mainly me) to not do trips like this, we went one step further and only planned ......

Microsoft SharePoint 2010 – RIP MOSS Acronym
In a bold move, Microsoft decided to rename SharePoint one more time to SharePoint 2010 for the next version. Check out these two articles on the change, but it looks like the detachment from Office does not mean it will be less feature rich with the integration with Office, much like portals weren’t removed when it went from SPS to MOSS. I am excited to see the name change, but we really need a new acronym as trendy as MOSS was. MSP, SPX, not sure. No name has been released for WSS, but my bet is ......

Windows 7 | Installed on my HP Mini 1000 and loving it
In the spirit of most Microsoft fan boys, I installed Windows 7 Beta on one of my machines as the primary OS and am having an excellent experience. No, it is not my TouchSmart (even though that would be awesome), but my HP Mini Netbook. As most have stated, this OS is very stable (except Lou and his BSOD) and am really looking forward to the test drive. I tried reporting some bugs I saw in the basics, but didn’t have any luck with the new Send Feedback feature. Hopefully it is due to everyone submitting ......

12/31/2008 | The Day The Zune 30 Died!!!
Today Doug came in with his Zune 30 and said, “Look at my screen, this is where it has been for 30 minutes.” I was shocked cause I had never seen that before, then I looked down at mine to find it synced with the exact same screen. So my question for Microsoft is “Why?”. Doug came back to the office a few minutes later saying the Zune boards are going crazy with this happening. I have my Zune 4gb right next to it and it is still working so this must be a Zune 30 only issue, but I can not completely ......

GWB | First Cake
My wife was kind enough to make me another cake for the office this year for my birthday (May 3rd). This year I wanted to use the new logo we had created for the new version of the site we will hopefully be releasing later this month. Here is a link to last years cake. Hobbies | Thanks @LesPaulRob (Rob Foster), Jeff has a Les Paul now as well!
Over the past 3 months, I have really been getting into playing the guitar. This was never easy for me because to get into playing the guitar, I would first have to own a guitar. I can't just go out and borrow a buddy's guitar because I don't know any Left-Handed players. So I had to drop a couple hundred dollars to see if I could play music. The Squier Stratocaster I started with a Squier Stratocaster from Musician's Friend (warehouse located in Kansas City) and began my music career :D. Jerod was ......

We Are Microsoft | We Are Microsoft Staff
This was a really fun interview, because we had the chance to talk to Toi Wright and Amber Weiss, the two people who coordinated the event, and who we worked with closely during the event. Toi coordinated this event by contacting charities in the Dallas area, gathering their requirements and defining a selection process. She was looking for charities who were in need of a software solution, but something that could be completed over the course of a weekend. She also sent out the call to local developers ......

Community | gets an great update
My favorite Regular Expression resource,, received a very nice face lift and enhancement recently and I thought you would like to know. For sometime now, the site was sort of broken, search features were not working, paging through the expressions were flaky and it looked like it was on the verge of going away. However, it looks like Steve Smith and the team were making some major enhancements and I am really excited to run into my next RegEx issue and being able to use this resource. ......

My Roadmap to Becoming a Better Developer | Tagged by: Dru Sellers
Dru Sellers recently tagged me on what I would do to become a better developer so here it goes: Get on SubText 1.9.5 - Running a growing software consulting firm is hard. Even with John at the helm with me, it takes a lot of time. This is one of the first acts I need to become a better developer due to the fact that is will require a high level of involvement with reviewing the code changes and merging the differences. Plus there will be an additional need to really get the most ......

SharePoint Conference 2008 Dates Announced | March 2-6, 2008...
March 2-6, 2008, I should be in Seattle at the Microsoft Office SharePoint Conference 2008 event. I don't know if they heard me when I mentioned the php/mySql driven site (probably not), but now the site is actually a SharePoint 2007 site. Hopefully more information will come out about the event, but you can register to get more information here. Technorati tags: SharePoint, MOSS, SharePoint Conference, Conference, Seattle ......

IPTV - You Rock My House!
In a word...WOW. Yesterday I had AT&T U-Verse installed at my house. My installation was the U-400 TV and Elite High-Speed Internet package. This product is amazing. I must say when the installer said, "I am running the Coax cable to the office for the gateway, then CAT- 5 to the TV", I was gitty. Microsoft has done a great job to make this service feel like Windows Media Center as the UI is the same blue bubble look. It is a little harder to get used to the channel structure as you get a million ......

We did it! It only took us 6 hours too. Dru, John, and Myself have been busting some tail to get this migration completed before everyone wakes up. However, we do know of some bugs, including the skin needing some tweaking. Those will get fixed in due time. Here are some pictures from tonight, enjoy. I am in the top right corner. If you think I need to shave, that is because I spent 3 hours sleeping on the floor of our office last night and have been here working since Thursday morning at 6:00am. ......

Disaster Hits Close To Home Again
This past week in Kansas and Missouri, we had some terrible storms with hail and tornados come through the area. In Olathe, we just had pea-sized hail and strong winds. About 40 miles south of us, a few tornados landed crossing the border into Missouri. My uncle, David Matthes, lost his entire house in a tornado as illustrated in Photos 1, 8, and 9. He told his wife, who works in Kansas City, to stay at the office as it was getting bad. Shortly after the call, he went downstairs and hid behind a ......

Virtual PC Environments - Differencing Disk Tip
After a machine of mine became consumed by a project, I have been building a new set of disks latest for my use during new projects. I always build my VPCs using differencing disk. For those of you new to this concept, it allows you to build a disk off of a parent disk and all changes at that point will go to the new disk. With the environment changing on us constantly with different releases of products, it is critical for you to get your project up quick. Here is my example: As you can see, I am ......

Here in St. Louis
Tomorrow I am giving a presentation on WCF for the St. Louis DevCares event. I decided to come early so I could get away from the office and focus on getting my demos ready for tomorrow. Once I arrived, I remembered the STL .Net User Group meets on the day before ours, so I stopped by and chatted with Scott Spradlin, who runs the group. This however was not an uneventful day. Due to some database server issues, GWB was running like crap to be blunt. That and with an abnormal amount of traffic for ......

Tim Hibbard is visiting the GWB HQ today, track his travels
Tim Hibbard is coming into the GWB HQ today to talk about our usage of Team System and hopefully to tag his laptop and car with GWB stickers. He should be leaving soon so if you want to track his progress, watch the Where's Tim site. Tim will be the first visitor of our office after the move a few weeks back. We were in a 12x14 room with 10 machines booted up, so the average temperature was 78F. Not to comfortable. Since we had everything on wheels, we upgraded our lease and moved everything down ......

Wow, I love Vista and Office 2007

Just absolutely amazing!!! John and I loaded our TabletPC with Vista and Office 2007 Beta 2 without VPC and I must say, I really like what I see. Most Tablets, including ours, don’t have the video needed for Aero, but the user experience is still much better than XP. Anyone else using Vista and Office with a dedicated daily notebook or tablet?

To blog inside Word using .Text, you need to update the XmlRpc assembly used.

Columbus is great!
My presentation went off with a bang. We landed at the Microsoft office exactly at 6pm because of a wreck that closed the road we were suppose to take. The group was very energetic and asked lots of questions. I want to thank them for coming and listen to me babble about syndication. Afterwards a few of us went off for some dinner at a Chicken wing join across the street. If you are in the Columbus area tonight, Drew, Jeff, me, and a few more people are getting together for some fun. Post a comment ......

OK, this is my final sample, I promise!
Well I just love making RSS and using RSS to make other things, I can't help it. Today, for my fifth example, I wrote a simple RSS to WordML transform. WordML is a very robust dialect. I can't believe how many elements actually go into producing WordML. Very interesting stuff. If you are looking for the best resource for information on XML and Office 2003, check out “XML in Office 2003 - Information Sharing With Desktop XML” by Charles Goldfarb and Priscilla Walmsley. Wireless Optical Desktop Elite Review
Wow... This set actually rocks! I have never owned a wireless keyboard or mouse that I actually liked. The design was always flawed in some way. This one is almost perfect. I really like the soft wrist rest (yeah yeah, you aren't suppose to use one when you type, whateva). Also, it gives you the comfort of the Microsoft Office keyboards, without as much bulk. The mouse is completely amazing. One of the features the site actually talks about it the comfort for both right and left handed people. I ......
