SMTP and Vista

As I progress with using Vista as my primary OS, I am finding some things that need to be addressed.

One of the items left out of vista is an SMTP server.  In XP and older operating systems you can have this installed with IIS.  However, vista does not include an smtp server.

You have a few options out there to download (http://softstack.com/freesmtp.html) or (http://www.smartertools.com/Products/SmarterMail/Free.aspx)

Steve (Steve Schofield) has a good post discussing this.  I wish I would have done a search before I started looking all over vista to find the app to install.

I am upset that they did not include this in the app or give developers another option.

MailEnable is another one. POP3, IMAP, SMTP too.

This is one of the most basic components I would expect in an OS.

I can send an email using XP in about 5 lines of code.
Through vista I have been at it for about 2 weeks trying to get it to send.
Tried all of those relay servers and it always gives me SMTP response errors.
There is a problem with permissions, but I can't figure it out

I have a similar problem. Transferred everything from an XP machine to a Vista machine using Windows Transfer. Outlook can receive emails but cannot send. SMTP settings are exactly the same as the two other compuers in th house.

I am using Vista and need desperately to get POP3 SMTP. Please let me know if I need to get the Geek Squad or if I can do this myself. The Geek Squad in Charlotte, NC, installed my pc for me.
Thanks

Vista blocks port 25 (used for sending emails through Outlook) if your IP address is Dynamic.
Change your IP Address to Static, it will open up the port 25 and emails will go out.

I'll jump in and have a go

Found this one that works on x64 Vista. Bit of a pain in the proverbial to
set up, but it works ok. Download is in a zip file, just unzip to a folder,
find the readme and get confused from there It will run from the
folder, no actual initial install required.

Running as a service doesn't work - got the 'has stopped working blah
blah' - but it does run from the System tray. And relays too.
