Laptop update
Well my laptop harddisk has really given up now. The problems have been worsening over the past week, and now it will start ‘tapping’ sometimes, after its been on for a while. Also, it wont boot normally anymore, I have to press ESC during post, and manually select the hdd in the boot menu, and whenever I do that, it tells me that SMART has detected the hdd must be replaced.I have been clearing all non-essential data off the laptop, and defragmented it. I tried running a checkdisk with ......

60.000 UK Government PC's unusable after XP migration
http://www.theregister.co.u... of the desktop computers in the UK's Department for Work and Pensions were paralysed for four days on Monday, when a failed upgrade took them offline. The outage, covering 75-80 per cent of the DWP's 80,000 PCs, is one of the largest in the UK Government's not entirely impressive IT history. The news coming out on this seems to suggest that they where attempting to upgrade a bunch of test machines, and accidentaly pushed their test image ......

Wireless networking on larger scales
Its starting to happen. The Dutch magazine Computable is reporting that the “Stichting Wireless Leiden”, a dutch wireless advocacy group, is joining forces with other regional wireless groups to offer wifi access thoughout the province of Zuid Holland. This would include an area covering cities like The Hauge, Delft, Leiden and perhaps also Rotterdam. This is damn cool. I am convinced that the Netherlands is small enough to cover completely in wifi networks, and I forsee a furture marketshare ......

Darwin created God in his image
Dan Gillmor – A recent Gallup poll on support of Darwinism amung Americans. My opinion is sure to upset some people, but what are blogs for if not to express mine. I find it strange how a country that used to be so culturally progressive, seems to have gotten "stuck" in this Christian conservatism. While rest of the (western) world seems to be slowly waking up from the religious daydream, it seems almost like the American heartland is reverting back to a 50's mindset. Now I have nothing against ......

Oke.. here is a breakdown of what my daily morning and commute looks like.6am, alarm goes, get up. Walk into living room (usually naked), turn on laptop. Get the shower going (takes a minute to warm up), laptop has awoken from hibernation (I rarely log on or off), start ipodder (or doppler, depending on stability of current build), shower, get dressed, gel, teeth, check status of podcasts.. quit ipodder if taking too long (you cant cancel individual feed downloads.. for fucks sake).. take XDA out ......

ITT: Fresh Windows installation -ATI Catalist cli.exe, Client Side Caching issues (Solved)
Now Half Life 2 has come out, it was time to prepare the game computer. I hadn't touched it for weeks, as I do most of my stuff on the laptop now. The installation on it was over a year old and full of all kinds of junk that I dont need on there anymore. So I decided to stick a new installation on there. Because I use folder redirection and a bunch of other tricks to keep all essential data on the server, I had no problems simply formatting C and reinstalling Windows XP + SP2 from the CD. Dave over at eDave.org alerted me, via his podcast, to a keynote adress (link to Techworld.com) by Bill Gates, in which he says: "The move towards smart cards is the way forward," said Gates in his keynote at IT Forum, in Copenhagen this morning. "The idea is to have a smart card that connects up in the best way - a .Net based smart card."Well Duh. I mean Duh on Smartcards in general, and the idea that passwords are dead, (I'll have to dig in a little deeper to get what the difference is between ......

Podcast quality going up
Podcast quality is going up. Now this comment comes forth from just general perseption, listening to podcasts. People seem to be setteling into formats now, getting routines going, getting their hands on better equipment like mixers and better mic's, and just getting more skilled at presenting shows, talking, editing, etc. But another reason I felt the need to post this was because this morming I listened to our In the Trenches recording of Saterday, and I manged to listen to the first half of the ......

Dreaming of a 3G Christmas ?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/... I dont know a whole lot about most wireless technologies, but 3G seems to have cost the telecomunications industry more money than they can ever earn back, at least from what I hear. The auction of 3G licenses and radio spectrum in Europe played a significant part in the tech bubble of the late 1990s. Convinced that 3G adoption would be rapid and the profits from data massive, European telecommunications companies ploughed a total of €109 ......

Morning musings
Been getting up at 5am the last two days, to make up for having to leave early due to a completely pointless roadshow that my employer held on Thuesday evening. (Pointless cause I hearn nothing I hadn't heard before).Getting up earlier seems to have some advantages. First off, public transport is pretty quiet that early, so that is nice. It also seems that the route between my work and Utrecht Central, my crossover station, seems to be covered by a double-decker train earlier in the morning, and ......

http://www.newsisfree.com/i... always have a little chuckle when I read this kind of article. For quite some time I tried pointing out to people the weakness of the egg-shell model. The way in which companies place all their trust in a hard outside.. the Firewall, and basicly ignore any security inside their 'egg' .. and they are thus keeping their security eggs in one basket.
