Using Is.Gd/Bitly/TinyUrl/Facebook Post in Chrome

This morning I got sick of having to constantly open my bookmark toolbar to use Is.Gd (it just messes with the zen of Chrome) so I tried to figure out how to have it as a shortcut.

One option is to name the bookmark something like !gd, while this works, you have to type it in and press (down) twice, then enter. Not my cup of tea.

As it turns out Chrome doesn't really need a query for a search engine, if you make a engine with no location for the query string pressing Enter will invoke it immediately.

So here are the steps:

  1. Open your bookmarks tab (CTRL+B).
  2. Drag the bookmarklet onto it.
  3. Right click the new bookmark -> Edit...
  4. Copy the entire URL.
  5. Close.
  6. (Wrench) -> Options
  7. Basics tab.
  8. To the right of "Default Search:" click Manage.
  9. Click Add.
  10. Give it a name (mine was is.gd)
  11. Give it a keyword (like sht).
  12. Paste in the URL.
  13. Ok. Close. Close.
  14. Right click the bookmark on your bookmark tab.
  15. Delete.

To use it go to the page of choice and type in the keyword in your address bar and hit Enter.

Justice.
