It took from 6:05 pm Aug 9th till 7:33 am Aug 10th to fix the problem. Turns out our MX record was pointing to the wrong mail server for incoming email. We would get delays and problems and it finally made everything grind to a halt. Everything mentioned in the ticket was beyond my control yet it appeared to be my problem all of Monday.
The fix would take 24 hours to propogate through the internet so our email is basically hosed today as well. The emails I sent myself yesterday finally timed out which means that the majority of emails sent to us on Monday will get bounce messages. This will be a fun exercise for our users if they get the emails that were sent on Monday. There were messages in queue so they should have all of the emails that were sent but I guess we'll get to see that whenever things clear up.
I don't know where the problem started but it is a rather annoying one. Configuration problems are what I suspected initially but I never thought that the problem was with our DNS record (which I think our web developer handles). I don't know who to point the finger at but at this point I really don't care. I'd rather have everything up and working normally and if the problem does happen again we're most likely changing hosting providers. We do way too much communication through email to be able to handle days of downtime.
Que sera sera I suppose. At least now I won't get bugged about it every 5 minutes.
